Special Topics:  Fundamentals of Materials Technology for Teachers

Course Description
This one-week intensive course is designed to provide the experience needed for teachers to teach the fundamentals of materials science and technology in the high school. It consists of background information plus a variety of hands-on laboratory exercises that can be carried out in a high school setting.  The subject matter is such that these topics can be used in a physical science class or as a separate materials technology class. Following the one-week course, teachers are required to utilize at least one module in their classroom, evaluate its effectiveness, and present a report to the principal instructor.

Course Objectives
Following this course, teachers will be able to:

  • Introduce the topic of materials technology into their school curriculum
  • Provide their students with a series of motivating, hands-on laboratory experiences
  • Demonstrate the properties of metals, ceramics, polymers and composites and how these properties are determined by structure and processing

Process for Materials Camp teacher graduates to acquire these credits 
Teachers may enroll for credit as part of the ASM Materials Camp-Teachers program.  This provides 3 quarter graduate credits (= 2 semester credits) from the University of Washington-Seattle.  To be eligible for credit, teacher participants must:

  • Complete the University registration  form and return it to Jeane Deatherage (address below).
  • Both items MUST be turned in to your Materials Camp Master teacher instructor or sent to Jeane Deatherage before the conclusion of your Materials Camp program.

Grade Options
Grade “C”

  • For teachers who sign up for credit and attend 100% of the Materials Camp-Teachers program, a minimum grade of C will be assigned.
  • Grades will be available in January
  • This option does not require the submission of a written letter or report.

Grade “B”

  • For teachers who utilize at least one activity learned from the Materials Camp-Teachers curriculum in their classes and submit a lesson plan, a short report on what was done in class and a brief evaluation of the activity, a grade of B or B+ will be assigned depending on report quality.
  • Required report components:
    Teacher and school name and grade level
    Full lesson plan
    Evaluation report on how the lesson worked and what the students learned
    Report to be 2 to 5 pages plus copies of example student work
  • Must be received by Jeane Deatherage by 10 December for grade assignment.  Grades will be available in January.

Grade “A”

  • For high school teachers who make extensive use of the MST curriculum, submit a full written evaluation of the results of its use, and submit a report on what topic/ activity was used in the classroom, and the evaluation, a grade of A or A- will be assigned depending on report quality.
  • Required report components:
    Teacher and school name and grade level
    Lesson plans for at least 3 lessons used in class
    Full evaluation report on how the lesson worked and what the students learned
    3 to 5 page report plus copies of example student work.
  • Must be received by 10 December for grade assignment.
  • Grades will be available in January.

How to get the grades
The University of Washington does not mail final grade reports to students.  Grades are accessed online through MyUW at http://www.myuw.washington.edu.  To access this system you need your UW Student ID Number and a PAC (Personal Access Code) which you will receive with your transaction summary/receipt. 

Grades posted by early January and are generally available before Jan 30.

Teachers needing official confirmation of attendance or early grade confirmation may request such confirmation by contacting ASM.
