2003 Recipients
Congratulations to the 2003 recipients of the ASM Student Chapter Grants!
The ASM International Foundation is very pleased to announce the recipients of the 2003 ASM Student Chapter Grants.
Colorado School of Mines - “Materials and You”
The project will involve college students going out to area high schools and giving a presentation about how materials affect our daily lives, and the importance of material science and engineering. Demonstrations of superconductors, jumping bi-metal buttons, and shape memory alloys will be shown during the presentations.
Participating high school students will have the opportunity to enter an essay contest on a topic of “How materials affect my life”. Ten students will be chosen through the contest to visit the CSM campus for a day and experience hands on materials science related activities. Three winners will be selected and invited alone with their parents to attend Barret Award & Student Night–a formal dinner co-organized by the Rocky Mountain ASM International Chapter and MSEC-- where they will be recognized. San Jose State University - “Open House”
This one-day event will educate high school and community college students about Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). The students are from various high schools and junior colleges in the local Santa Clara County area. This event is specifically targeted at physics and chemistry high school students and engineering-majors community college students.
This outreach program consists of five major demonstrations, which include demonstrations/informative items, making silly putty, making liquid nitrogen ice-cream and shape memory alloy experiments. (view entire proposal)
Carnegie Mellon University & University of Pittsburgh (Partnership) - Mini-MATERIALS CAMP
This partnership will create a unique educational outreach program effort to expose Pittsburgh area high school students to materials science and engineering, at the actual ASM Materials Solution conference in Pittsburgh.
This project is geared to bring ASM members and local young people together in the spirit of scientific exploration. Located inside the actual exposition/trade show area, we will elucidate the mystery of materials science and show high school students how the field plays a fundamental role in the advancement of all scientific and engineering disciplines. A series of ten (10) hands-on “Materials Learning Exhibits” will be developed for intense student interaction. (view entire proposal)
Created to encourage and support ASM Student Chapters in their educational outreach activities, ASM Student Chapter Grants fund activities that support our mission "to excite young people worldwide in materials science and engineering."
