Introducing …
The Undergraduate Design Competition!
Specifics:
- Based on submission of design-focused project reports describing work performed as part of the capstone course or a team project performed by undergraduate engineering students at any level.
- Recognizing the diversity of design curricula in materials and related engineering departments, a broad definition of “design” is considered for this competition.
- Projects submitted can address topics including: (a) design of a material; (b) design of a process for materials synthesis or fabrication; (c) selection of materials in design of products or devices.
Awards:
The winning teams will receive: First Prize: $2,000.00 + $ 500 travel assistance + $ 500 to the department for support of future design teams Second Prize: $1,500.00 + $ 500 travel assistance Third Prize: $1,000.00 + $ 500 travel assistance
Presentation of Awards:
The awards will be presented at the Fall MS&T meeting.
Participation and Eligibility:
- Design projects may be submitted by teams (with two or more students) from any undergraduate university engineering program (e.g., materials science and engineering, metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, ceramic engineering, and polymer engineering, or related programs, including but not limited to mechanical-, chemical-, electrical-, or bio-engineering).
- Projects may be based on work performed as part of the capstone design course or a team project performed by undergraduate students at any level. However, the submitted projects must address the broad definition of “design” as stated above. Interdisciplinary teams with members from various engineering and science disciplines are encouraged to submit their entries.
- Only one entry may be submitted per university. The university’s faculty advisor for Material Advantage or ASM International headquarters (see contact information below) should be contacted to make sure that only one entry is submitted/university. If multiple entries are received from a single university, all entries will be rejected.
- Each entry should be accompanied by a signed statement indicating that at least one team member will be present at the Fall Meeting of ASM International (MS&T) to receive the award.
Application Submission Procedure:
While specifics of design projects may differ from program to program, each entry submitted (one per university) must include the following:
- COVER PAGE (with Title of design project and stating if entry is based on capstone course or other team project; Names of student team members and faculty advisor; Name of institution and department; Correspondence address; and Statement from department chair or faculty advisor endorsing that the work described is based on work performed by the student team)
- EXECUTIVE SUMMARY (one page description of problem statement, approach, key results, and concluding remarks)
- PROJECT REPORT (including any oral and/or visual presentations)
Deadline: 15 June
A subcommittee of the Action in Education Committee will review the entries and determine the winners.
Submit entries along with supporting documents to: Pergentina L. Deatherage Administrator, Foundation Programs Materials Park, OH 44073 Jeane.deatherage@asminternational.org
