Metallography and Microstructure Resources from ASM
International Metallographic Society (IMS) The International Metallographic Society, an affiliate society of ASM, serves those involved in the examination, analysis, characterization, structure and evaluation of materials. Members receive the official IMS newsletter, SlipLines, and a variety of other benefits, including substantial discounts on selected publications.
Screen Saver Not only are micrographs informative, some of them are just plain beautiful. We've compiled some of our favorites into a micrograph screen saver. Download a free screensaver for your Windows PC today!
Online ASM Micrograph Center Online is a comprehensive and continuously expanding collection of micrograph images and associated data. The focus of the collection is on micrographs for industrially important alloys. Information captured for each image includes material designation and composition, processing history, service history, metallographic preparation/technique, magnification, significance of the structures shown, selected materials properties data, and other relevant details.
Handbooks ASM Handbook, Volume 9, Metallography and Microstructures is the leading single-volume reference work on metallography and interpretation of microstructures. Several other volumes in the ASM Handbook series provide significant information of interest to metallographers, including Volume 3, Alloy Phase Diagrams, Volume 10, Materials Characterization, and Volume 11, Failure Analysis and Prevention. All of these volumes--and many more--are included in ASM Handbooks Online.
Reference Books ASM International is a leading publisher of reference works on metallography and microstructure. A few of the most popular titles include:
Light Microscopy of Carbon Steels, by L.E. Samuels
Metallographer's Guide: Practices and Procedures for Irons and Steels, by B.L. Bramfitt and A.O. Benscoter
Metallographic Etching, 2nd Edition, by G. Petzow
Metallographic Polishing by Mechanical Methods, 4th Edition, by L.E. Samuels
Metallography: Principles and Practice, by G.F. Vander Voort
Education/Training ASM offers several courses related to metallography and metallographic interpretation. Laboratory courses are available that provide hands-on training with guidance from industry experts. View the seminar calendar to see ASM seminars by date.
Advanced Materials & Processes Magazine Advanced Materials & Processes magazine addresses metals technology for design, testing, and processing. Several issues a year focus on topics related to metallography, microscopy, and image analysis. Also be sure to check out the online Testing Buyer's Guide.
Events Many of ASM's conferences and expositions feature programming and exhibits related to metallography and materials characterization.
Technical Journals From the latest research to practical solutions for engineering problems, ASM journals are among the most trusted titles in the materials field. Several ASM titles feature regular coverage related to materials characterization. ASM has teamed with Ingenta to provide online access to its industry-leading journals.
ASM Archive The ASM Archive lists thousands of articles published in ASM magazines, journals, and conference proceedings, including hundreds of articles related to materials testing and characterization. Many of the articles are available in full-text PDF format. ASM members can download two free PDF documents per year as a benefit of membership.
