Student Board Member Programs

The Boards of ASM International (ASM), the ASM Failure Analysis Society (FAS), the ASM Heat Treating Society (HTS), the ASM International Metallographic Society (IMS) and the ASM Thermal Spray Society (TSS) each value the input and participation of Material Advantage students.  Material Advantage student members are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity to provide their insights, ideas and energy to the ASM, FAS, HTS, IMS and TSS Boards. 

• All expenses to attend board meetings are paid for by the respective society.

You must be a Material Advantage undergraduate or graduate student member during the 2017-2018 academic year.

• Attend two (2) Board meetings
   o Fall 2017
   o Spring 2018
• Participate in two (2) teleconferences
• Term begins September 2017

You must be a Material Advantage undergraduate student member during the 2017-2018 academic year with an interest in the field of failure analysis.

• Attend two (2) Board meetings
   o October 2017
during HTS C&E
   o Spring 2018
• Participate in three (3) teleconferences
Term begins September 2017

You must be a Material Advantage undergraduate student member during the 2017-2018 academic year with an interest in the field of heat treating or metallurgy/materials science.

• Attend one (1) Board meeting
(October 2018)
• Participate in monthly teleconferences
• Receive a one-year complimentary membership in Materials Advantage
• Term begins August 2017

You must be a Material Advantage undergraduate or graduate student member during the 2017-2018 academic year, with an interest in the field of metallography, metallurgy/ materials science.

• Attend one (1) Board meeting in the USA in the second half of 2017
• Participate in two (2) teleconferences
• Receive a one-year complimentary membership in Material Advantage
Term begins October 2017

You must be an undergraduate or graduate student during the 2017-2018 academic year, studying or researching in an area closely related to the field of thermal spray technology.

Your application package must include the following:

  1. Online Application Form

  2. Your current resume

  3. Indicate which board you are applying to: ASM, FAS, HTS, IMS or TSS, select only one

  4. A two-page essay (typed and double spaced) addressing your interest in participating in  the program. Please be sure to address the following points:
     

    • What experiences led to your interest in this program?

    • What qualities, characteristics and skills do you possess that will make you a strong candidate to serve as a student representative to the Board?

    • What do you hope to learn/gain from this program?

  5.  Provide 2-3 letters of recommendation from faculty.

Selected ASM Board participants will be notified by May 30, 2017. Affiliate Society Board participates will be notified by June 30, 2017. Those selected will begin their non-renewal, non-voting term as a Student Board Member according to the schedule above.
