Chapter Events

With a current roster of 80+ professional Chapters worldwide, ASM offers one of the most extensive networking opportunities available. Chapters serve as extensions of the Society to the local community by providing opportunities for professional networking, education, student outreach, professional development and more.

Chapter events, held mainly between the months of September and June, are updated often so check back regularly for updates from our local chapter community.

Upcoming Event: April 26th, 2017

April 26, 2017 | 1825 Broad Street

Cranston , Rhode Island , USA

ASM National Speaker Ryan Deacon will present a talk on Biometrics. Ryan M. Deacon is a staff scientist in the Physical Sciences Department of United Technologies Research Center. His work there focuses on materials characterization technologies, failure analysis and physical metallurgy. Ryan was previously with the Engineering Research & Technology group of the DuPont Corporation, where he served as the corporate failure analyst, conducting failure investigations and material analyses for all of the DuPont businesses. Prior to DuPont, he was a senior professional staff member at the John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Biomimetics refers to human-made processes, substances, devices or systems that imitate biology. Natural systems have been redesigned and improved gradually over thousands of years, resulting in elegant solutions that are tailor-made for specific problems. In the past few decades, significant advances have been made in our understanding of natural design and its benefits, and in our ability to mimic nature. This has led to the development of innovative solutions for man-made challenges that take their inspiration from biology. We have also learned that it is not as easy as simply copying something found in nature. Successful biomimicry requires a thorough understanding not only of nature's solution, but also of the problem it is intended to solve. Event will take place at the William Hall Library 1825 Broad Street, Cranston Rhode Island Networking starts at 5:30PM with the presentation beginning at 6:00PM. Dinner will follow the presentation. Composite Design, Fabrication, Prototyping, and Production

April 27, 2017 | Copper Canyon Cafe, 5455 Gibson Blvd SE

Albuquerque , NM , USA

Fiber-reinforced composite materials are used in a number of engineering applications at Sandia National Laboratories in support of our national security mission. The Polymer Processing Laboratory has expertise and capability that supports composite design, fabrication, prototyping, and limited production for DoE and DoD Programs. This includes design, material selection, tooling production, fabrication (wet layup, pre-preg layup), curing, and final/finish machining. We also partner with polymer physicists, polymer material characterization specialists, and stress analysts to understand performance of composite structures in thermal, mechanical, and other relevant environments. This presentation will describe our equipment and capabilities, and will then focus on examples of recent applications. Sandia National Laboratories is a multi-program laboratory managed and operated by Sandia Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation, for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-AC04-94AL85000.
