Sixteen Members of the Board and Officers of ASM International Visit Chicago Regional Chapter of ASM International

Lead by Dr Dianne Chong, President of ASM International, sixteen members of the Board of Trustees, Officers and ASM International staff visited the Chicago Regional Chapter of ASM International after completing their Board Meeting earlier in the day.

Chicago Regional Chapter was delighted by the visit and the opportunity to exchange ideas and insights into ASM International during the Hospitality Hour. The sixteen visiting members were introduced to the local membership and Dr. Chong expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to visit with the members of Chicago Regional Chapter.

After the dinner, Membership Awards were presented to those who had reached Five-Year, Fifteen-Year, Twenty-Five Year, and Life Membership in ASM International.

Jan Edwards then presented a review of her plans for organizing this years’ ASM Summer Camp for high school students. The Summer Camp has been operating in Chicago since 2002 and has introduced students to metallurgy primarily by conducting a failure analysis. Chicago Regional is one of many Chapters that sponsor camps in various forms to acquaint students and teachers with Materials Science. Jan also introduced the membership to new internet site developments emerging from the Education Committee at the ASM International Headquarters level.

Chicago Regional Chapter of ASM International is blessed with two active Student Chapters, one at Illinois Institute of Technology and the other at Northwestern University. Professor Philip Nash (left) with a contingent of students from Illinois Institute of Technology. His wife, Guiru (second from left), is the Chapter Secretary and one of the many ASM International Members who keep the Chapter running smoothly. At far right is Dr. Aziz Asphahani, Past President of ASM International.

Dr. Tom Zwitter presented his talk on new developments in powder metallurgy. Tom believes that there will be new applications for titanium and stainless steels in powder metallurgy. The technical presentation concluded the meeting.

Membership Days 2008 – Save the Dates

Mark your calendars! Membership Days will return October 13 – 17 2008. More details to follow soon.

Chapter Change Report - A Valuable Officer Tool

What is the most important role of your Chapter’s Membership Committee? Retaining current members! Without a strong member base, the opportunities to grow your Chapter through new member acquisition are limited.

ASM Chapter Membership Committee Chairs, Chapter Chairs, Vice Chairs, Secretaries, and Treasures all have access to a Chapter Change Report from ASM International. This report reviews membership over the past month and is updated the first week of each month. A variety of information can be found in the report, including members who have lapsed in paying their dues. Member services are cut off and the membership is canceled after 120 days. The report also includes members who have changed their contact information and members who have transferred in or out of the Chapter.

The Chapter Change Report can be used to inform and reconnect with Chapter members who have lapsed, reminding them of the membership value and to engage them in the programs and activities of your local Chapter and ASM International. Officers can determine if there are concerns or complaints which can be resolved. Often, a member doesn’t fully understand the value and variety of member programs and services available, and that extra information provided from a peer will often result in a renewed membership.

Chapter Officers will receive an e-mail at the beginning of each month when the report is available. Officers can access the report on the ASM Community under Officer Tools.

First, login with your ASM member number and password. ASM member numbers are found on your ASM member card or you can use your e-mail address. Your password is your last name first letter capitalized unless you have previously changed it.

Then, click on the blue bar across the top labeled Membership and Networking.

Next, on the left hand navigation you will select Councils and Committees.

Under Councils and Committees you will see Officer Tools, click here.

Then, you will see E-mail Roster Labels, Chapter Change and other officer tools.

For information on membership programs and services or general membership questions, contact Scott Giesler, Society Programs Coordinator at scott.giesler@asminternational.org or 440.338.5151, ext. 5655.

Have questions or want tips on how to retain members or renew your membership? Contact Karen Zapp, Retention Specialist at karen.zapp@asminternational.org or 440-338-5151, ext. 5638.

For more information, contact Megan Herrmann, Chapter Relations Administrator at megan.herrmann@asminternational.org or 440-338-5151 x 5651.

Material Advantage

University of Connecticut Hosts Northeast Regional Material Advantage Conference

The University of Connecticut Material Advantage chapter (UCMA) recently hosted the first Northeast Regional Material Advantage Conference on February 23, 2008, at the Storrs, CT campus. After attending MS&T 2007 in Detroit, Michigan, the executive board was inspired by the number of active chapters who participated. Since there is not currently a Material Advantage Annual Meeting, the chapter decided to host an event bringing together area University chapters and industry professionals. Another goal was to further outreach by extending the conference to high school students and provide an opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences, meet each other in a more relaxed setting than a national conference, and encourage high school students to take an interest in science and technology.

The one-day event began with an emerging professionals’ career forum. Posters displayed current research undertaken by both graduate and undergraduate students. The Journal of Materials Science sponsored the poster session which awarded prizes for Best Undergraduate Poster, Best Graduate Poster, and Best in Show. The winners were Undergraduate James Bosse for "Efficient Large Area AFM Imaging", Graduate Perry Wilbon for "Layer-by-layer Assembled Semipermeable Membranes for Glucose Sensors", and Best In Show Yan-Ling-Hu for "Microstructure and Phase Stability in a Quinternary Nb-Mo-Cr-Al-Si Alloy".

Materials Science demonstrations were also presented by the UConn Chapter’s Outreach Committee and included a space shuttle tile and a fuel cell car.

Technical presentations, displaying a range of current research areas in materials science and engineering, included topics such as Biomaterials: Is it Right for You? Part of what you should know, Transmission Electron Microscopy as a Tool in Materials Research, Advanced Nanomaterials Design through Simulation, and Radical Salt-doped Organic Photovoltaic Devices.

Participants were honored to have Roger Fabian, Vice President of ASM International, presenting the keynote address. Fabian, introduced by Arnie Grot, former chair of ASM Hartford, presented a speech on the growing demand of engineers, both domestically and abroad. Fabian was very encouraging to the students who are the future of materials science and the future of ASM.

The UConn Chapter plans to hold this event again next spring extending the invitation to all Material Advantage Chapters. Look for an announcement in early autumn 2008. For more information on the UConn Material Advantage Chapter or the Material Advantage Conference, go to their website at www.engr.uconn.edu/~ucma or contact the Chapter at material.advantage.uconn@gmail.com.

Education

Raise Money for your Chapter While Helping your Members Improve Performance

Due to the increase costs experienced by ASM to provide the products and services associated with Chapter Courses, a slight increase was necessary for the 2008 calendar year.  The increase reflects paper, postage, printing and other miscellaneous costs and translates into a cost of $312 per product vs. the previous price of $285 for Chapters.

We strive to keep our costs down and while providing the most up-to-date technical content. As always, we will maintain our commitment to serving our chapters with the highest level of responsibility and benefit.

If you have any questions, concerns or interest in receiving more information about the benefits of holding a chapter course, please feel free to contact John Cerne at 440.338.5151 x5637.

To view a list of courses that may be of value to your chapter and members, visit the website.

Please accept our gratitude for providing great services to your membership and understanding this necessary change.
