ASM Micrograph Tie w/Free Shipping

This micrograph won second place in the artistic microscopy class in the 2003 International Metallographic Contest. It was submitted by Brian Rose, ArvinMeritor Columbus Technical Center. The image shows an as-cast weld deposit of a 409 stainless steel joint, exhibiting large columnar ferrite grains with martensite occurring at the grain boundaries. The original photograph was at a 100x magnification with bright-field illumination. The sample was etched with potassium disulfite, sodium thiosulfate, and hydrochloric acid in water. This 100% silk tie is a great gift for members recognition, officer appreciation or simply to spruce up your wardrobe.

The Emerging Professionals Program provides a younger demographic — the future of ASM — to see, understand and be involved with the inner workings of our internationally recognized professional society. The program allows ASM to seamlessly transition through from one generation to the next. Involvement goes beyond the local chapter level as our Emerging Professionals interact with ASM at the national level, organizing and executing events at the ASM Annual Meeting held at MS&T, guiding the direction of ASM by attending various committee meetings, as well as interacting with and learning from a diverse group of professionals who are acknowledged leaders within ASM International and as acknowledged mentors in the field.

Gujarat Chapter Symposium

On December 1st, 2007, the Gujarat Chapter in India organized a symposium to consult with the Institute of Petroleum Technology at the Gandhinagar. Participants from various industries and institutes of Gujarat state attended and, of those 240 attendees, 190 were student participants.

The symposium was held at the Gandhinagar under the Banner of ASM International, Gujarat Chapter, Ahmedabad and Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University. The Petroleum Sector is a booming sector for detailed study of the petroleum and to establish the university by the local authorities, it is an important task for the generations to come.

This symposium consisted of various speakers and technocrats in the field and at universities, who shared their knowledge and wide experience with the participants.

According to the Chapter members, the event was a grand success. It was also the strong feeling of the audience, as well as knowledge-sharing dignitaries, to hold such events more often for getting updated information on technological advances.

According to Bharat Dave, Gujarat Chapter Secretary, they have proposed and are considering a proposal to sponsor a Student Chapter.

Membership Matters

Keeping Senior Members Involved – ASM Retired and Life Memberships

A great resource for your Chapter and ASM International is the group of more senior members who have retired, but have vast experience, expertise and knowledge to share with fellow members. Oftentimes, these members have increased time available to support Chapter activities and can contribute in a number of ways, such as by serving as officers or coordinators of Chapter activities, volunteering as mentors to reach out and introduce students to the field of materials science, or by contacting members due for renewal.

ASM offers a special reduced membership dues program for “retired” members. The membership dues rate for Retired Membership is $61.80, 60% of the Individual ASM Only membership dues. To become eligible for the Retired Member Program, a member must be:
- 60 years of age
- Retired from full-time employment (part-time is allowed).
- Have been an ASM Individual or Chapter Sustaining Member Representative (or combination) for 10 years or more.

An ASM Life Member Program also is offered for those members who have reached a minimum age 65, with 35 or more continuous years of ASM individual membership (As age increases, the years of continuous membership decreases proportionately with a minimum total of 100). The membership dues rate for this group is $41.20, 40% of the Individual ASM Only membership dues. As a part of the ASM Annual Member Recognition Program Life members are recognized with a gold label pin with a synthetic ruby stone in the center.

Encourage retired members to contact ASM Customer Service at 800-336-5152 to take advantage of the special reduced membership dues rates, and keep them actively involved in your Chapter. For more information, contact Scott Giesler, Society Programs Coordinator, at scott.giesler@asminternational.org or phone: 440-338-5151, ext. 5655.

Material Advantage

Penny Wars Help Raise Funds for Penn State University Material Advantage Program

Material Advantage (MA) is a student organization comprised of undergraduate and graduate students of the department. In a fundraising effort, MA coordinated an event titled “Penny Wars.” Penny Wars is a competitive game that encourages donations of silver and discourages donations of pennies; well unless your goal is to get pie-ed! This year, the competition was held in October in Steidle Building. Many students, staff, faculty and friends donated to this fun and worthy eventwhere the Materials Advantage student group raised $685.66. The honored winners, also known as pie-ees of this event, were Dr. Joseph Flemish and Dr. Gary Messing. Nia Juwondo, an undergraduate student in Dr. Messing’s group, was the pie-er for Dr. Messing; Nick Dietz, an undergraduate in Dr. Flemish’s MatSE 201 course was the pie-er for Dr. Flemish. Thank you to everyone who helped with this successful event and special thanks to Joe and Gary for being great sports!

Education

Course Update

Due to the increase costs experienced by ASM to provide the products and services associated with Chapter Courses, a slight increase was necessary for the 2008 calendar year.  The increase costs referenced reflect paper, postage, printing and other misc. items.

The increase to the chapter translates into a cost of $312 per product vs. the previous price of $285.

We at ASM try very hard to keep our costs down and do our best to provide the most up-to-date technical content to you and your members. As always, we will maintain our commitment to serving our chapters with the highest level of responsibility and benefit.

If you have any questions, concerns or interest in receiving more information about the benefits of holding a chapter course, please feel free to contact John Cerne at 440.338.5151 x5637.

To view a list of courses that may be of value to your chapter and members, visit the website.

We would like to truly thank you for providing great services to your membership and for your understanding of this necessary change.
