Checkout the New Communities
Technology is a sign of the times and ASM is cruising into the future. This past year, ASM has been working with the ASM Affiliate societies and chapters to create new web communities. These communities are more interactive than traditional websites. They consist of forums for posting and answering questions, expertise finder linking members of similar interests and search engines with access to ASM handbooks, government research, conference papers and much more.
The Thermal Spray Society was the first to release their online community in May, followed by the release of the new ASM community in July and most recently the release of the Heat Treat Society Community in September. ASM staff, led by an affiliate society volunteer focus group, created these communities starting with the initial layout and design, then working up to the business plan and available content. If you haven’t already checked out these new communities, click on the links below.

TSS Community
ASM Community

HTS Community
ASM Chapter communities are currently in development. During Leadership Days 2007, a preview of the Utah Chapter, Twin Tier Chapter, North Texas Chapter, and Alamo Chapter were demonstrated. Chapters will work with staff to create their communities. A marketing kit will be supplied to the Chapter to advertise their new community release. Once the community is released Chapter will have the power to update and change their community content whenever they need or want to. ASM staff will always be there for support but the Chapters will be the true owners of their communities. These communities are free for the Chapters and will be as easy as using Microsoft word to update.

Chapter Corner

After almost 20 years, MS&T returned to the birthplace of ASM International – Detroit, MI. MS&T is the global forum for the materials community to explore structure, processing and applications across multiple materials systems. This event is a collaborative effort of The American Ceramic Society, the Association for Iron and Steel Technology, ASM International and The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society, and this year’s was co-located with the Heat Treating Conference and Exposition. The success of these two events is thanks in part to the tremendous efforts of our hosts, the Detroit Chapter of ASM International. The Chapter worked closely with ASM Headquarters throughout the planning and promotion process, to engage and encourage ASM member attendance in all areas from students to early career professionals to seasoned ASM members. This was one of the first efforts of ASM’s drive to partner with local chapters and increase the success of ASM events. For more information about how your chapter can partner for an upcoming event in your area, please click here to ontact Candace Cunningham.
