ASM
MEMBERSHIP INCREASES IN 2004
By Professor Blaine Danley, Ferris State University - Chair, ASM
Membership Committee
2004
was another great year for membership in ASM International, as The
Materials Information Society increased its total membership by
4.5 percent - the largest single-year net increase since 1981!
To appreciate this increase fully, it's useful to review ASM's membership
levels in recent years. After a high point in 1988 of 53,712 members,
ASM experienced its lowest membership total since 1961 in 2002 with
only 34,540 members.
ASM
reversed the decline at year-end 2003 with a total of 35,346 members
-- a significant increase of 2.3 percent. The end of 2004 had an
even more exciting finish: With a net growth of 1,586, ASM membership
totaled 36,932 members!
To add a bit of historical perspective, 1977 marked our society's
best year for membership growth. When 2004 is compared to other
years in the context of most successful growth, you see how important
this year's performance is over the last two decades.

There's
more good news! Attrition (members who did not renew their membership)
is at a 15-year low! In 1990, ASM lost 8,950 members. In 2004, ASM
lost 5,417 members -- that's 1,432 members below the average of
6,849! As with any membership organization, recruitment strengthens
and grows the entire organization. But retaining members is equally
important, because it strengthens the society even further. How
did we get so many new members? As always, a primary mechanism for
new member recruitment is our events! In 2004, the combined total
of new members from event registrants totaled 1,567. The remainder
came from a variety of sources, including, web sign-ups, direct
mail, education courses, Materials Camps, etc. The new Material
Advantage joint student program also provided a significant increase
in members with the incorporation of student members from the American
Ceramic Society and successful student chapter recruitment competitions.

New Members (net) |
To
add new members to our society, we continue to test every avenue
and every opportunity. If it works, we embrace it. If it doesn't
work, we analyze and determine if a new approach will help. We work
through mailings, e-mails and local ASM chapters to help demonstrate
the value of ASM membership to new and prospective members. The
results of these efforts will certainly impact our 2005 performance.
Where does this leave us? We estimate another year of increased
membership in 2005, with:
The
additional exposure and energy of our new cooperative event, MS&T
'05, which will bring new members to ASM
The
return of America's No. 1 heat treating event, the ASM Heat Treating
Society Conference and Exposition
Other
single-day and multi-day conferences and training programs
The
potential additions of other participating societies to the Material
Advantage joint student program
With the continued efforts of our members, chapters and staff, we
look forward to more good things - and further membership growth!

LEADERSHIP TRAINING OPPORTUNITY - Call for Nominations/Applications
- Six leadership training scholarships available for Material
Advantage student members
We
are seeking enthusiastic materials science students who will approach
this experience with an open mind and who can communicate the
value of this experience to others.
Graduates of this training may one day become managers, owners
and CEO's of companies!
Students active in campus organizations - Material Advantage student
chapter leaders are encouraged to apply!
The
LeaderShape® Institute is an intensive six-day program focusing
on key leadership issues, such as visions, results, integrity,
relationships and change. The experience is multi-dimensional
and interactive, and includes small group discussions, team building,
an outdoor challenge course, private journals, interaction with
facilitators from a variety of backgrounds and a business and
industry guest panel.
A highlight of the program is the development of the LeaderShape
Project, a well-conceived vision and plan of action for the participants
to implement back in their organization, community or workplace.
"The
week that I spent in the Allerton mansion at the LeaderShape Institute
was probably one of the most challenging weeks of my life in terms
of taking me out of my comfort zone. Because of this, it quickly
became one of the most satisfying and successful weeks of my life.
The intensity of the training, the seclusion of the location,
and the development of 'family cluster' - small breakout groups
of about 11 people - relationships contributed greatly to my personal
growth...In returning home from my training I feel a renewed excitement
for the upcoming school year and for what I can do to better the
Colorado School of Mines chapter of ASM... Thank you so much to
everyone that helped make my trip possible!"
Emily P. Yocom, Colorado School of Mines - 2003 LeaderShape Participant
The
program runs in the summer from June through August. Students
will have some flexibility in selecting the week that best fits
their schedule. The Institute is held at Allerton Conference Center
in Champaign, Illinois. The ASM Materials Education Foundation
provides transportation and covers all expenses for the week (room,
board and program materials). The LeaderShape® Institute is
the flagship program of LeaderShape®, Inc., a non-profit organization
committed to developing young adults to lead with integrity.

CHAPTER
FORUM - Share Ideas, Ask Questions, Learn Best Practices
In
response to the desire of chapter members to have a location to
discuss on a global level any ideas, issues or thoughts that come
up, Chapter Council developed the Chapter Forum for an open discussion
among members. Following the same format as the popular topical
discussion groups under the ASK ASM page of the website, the Chapter
Forum is a great place to share best practices, talk about your
successes and challenges and continue the number one reason for
chapter activity... NETWORKING! Give it a try! Visit: http://www.asminternational.org/Template.cfm?section=AskASM
