CHAPTER FORUM - Share Ideas, Ask Questions, Learn Best Practices

In response to the desire of chapter members to have a location to discuss on a global level any ideas, issues or thoughts that come up, Chapter Council developed the Chapter Forum for an open discussion among members. Following the same format as the popular topical discussion groups under the ASK ASM page of the website, the Chapter Forum is a great place to share best practices, talk about your successes and challenges and continue the number one reason for chapter activity... NETWORKING! Give it a try!

MATERIAL ADVANTAGE STUDENT PROGRAM - Society Cooperation Leads to Big Benefits

As the academic year is coming to a close, the Material Advantage program is experiencing considerable success and growth. Some key factors include:

  • There are now 62 Active Material Advantage chapters, including four newly rejuvenated chapters that were previously dormant.
  • There are now over 4,000 Material Advantage members, a significant increase since August when we added ACerS (900 members) and first introduced the program.
  • The program will soon be expanded internationally, which will add about 300 more Material Advantage members. Our current International Chapters will become Material Advantage student chapters.

"Membership growth is exciting, but ultimately, our goal is for these young members to become contributing professional members and future leaders of our chapters and society," said Melanie Walker, Coordinator for Chapter Relations & Membership. "Whenever you work with students, remember to promote the 'Prepare to Succeed' program and encourage students to take advantage of their free year of professional membership with ASM!" Material Advantage student members have been very positive about the program. For example: "My close involvement as an officer with the Material Advantage Student Chapter has meant a wealth of great challenges, opportunities and rewards that I did not even think were out there! I have sharpened my leadership and communication skills, networked with fellow students and professionals alike, traveled, educated myself as well as others. It has made me a better person and a better professional." -- Juan Villegas, Material Advantage student member, MS&E, University of Connecticut

ANNUAL CHAPTER REPORTS - Annual year-end chapter report deadline approaching

The annual reports for chapters include:

  • The Technical Program Report detailing the upcoming year's program schedule. The more detail that can be provided on this report the better, as this information is entered into the searchable chapter meeting schedule online.
  • Chapter Officer Report is a list of all incoming officers and executive committee members for your chapter. Updated contact information and telephone numbers are very important to verify that the information on file is the most current.
  • Quality & Recognition Program Report is the tool used to award the three, four and five star chapters.
  • Chapter of Excellence Award Nomination (optional) this report is used by Chapter Council to determine the best of the best in each of the five chapter size categories.
  • Financial Report (due 15 February each year) details the chapter's financial status and is used by headquarters to prepare federal income tax filings if necessary.

All report links can be found by visiting the Chapter/Committee section of the ASM website.
