ANNUAL CHAPTER REPORTS – Due June 30, 2006

The Annual Report packets have been sent and the deadline will be here before you know it.  Forms are also available on line, several of which are also available for online submission. Any questions about the reports, or for help in completing them, contact Candace. Report deadline: June 30.

Please note that in order to receive your annual rebate and be considered a chapter in good standing your chapter must submit all sections of the annual report by the June 30th deadline.

The annual reports for chapters include:

The Technical Program Report detailing the upcoming year's program schedule. The more detail provided on this report the better because this information is entered into the searchable chapter meeting schedule online.

The Chapter Officer Report listing all incoming officers and executive committee members for your chapter. Updated contact information and telephone numbers are important ensuring the information on file is the most current.
Quality & Recognition Program Report is used to award the three, four and five star chapters.
Financial Report (due Feb. 15 each year) detailing the chapter's financial status. It is used by headquarters to prepare federal income tax filings if necessary.
Chapter of Excellence Award Nomination (optional) is used by Chapter Council to determine the best of the best in each of the five chapter size categories.

All report links can be found by visiting the Chapter/Committee section of the ASM website.

THREE STUDENTS TO BRING ENTHUSIASM, IDEAS TO ASM BOARD

The leadership of ASM is about to get a TRIPLE DOSE of student-generated ideas and enthusiasm from the first student members selected to the board.

"We're very proud to announce that the first three Material Advantage Student Members of the ASM Board of Trustees have been selected," says Melanie Walker, Coordinator, Chapter Relations & Membership.  "These three students will participate in board meetings and the strategic planning process, starting this month in Seattle."  Please join us in congratulating:

Lindsey Campbell, University of Missouri, Rolla

"As leaders in Material Advantage, we have the responsibility to meet the needs of our students and I can contribute in this area….Mainly, I want to find out what the students need and find a way to meet those needs.  I also want to learn more about ASM and how I can contribute to the society during and after college."

Deborah Carlson, South Dakota School of Mines

"The opportunity to impact the future of ASM by representing the student members of Material Advantage is a unique challenge that I am enthusiastic for and willing to dedicate time and energy towards….I'm eager to demonstrate my qualifications and passion for this position and to contribute to the advancement of ASM in the upcoming year."

Marian (Molly) Kennedy, Washington State University

"The success of ASM is tied to its ability to serve all its current members and prepare for the needs of its future members also.  As a graduate student, I have the unique position of being able to convey the current concerns and opinions of your youngest members—the undergraduate and graduate students….Serving as a student representative to the Board of Trustees will be an honor."

President Reza Abbaschian believes ASM "will learn as much or more from the students as they do from us."  We will be announcing this exciting news to the membership and to the materials science and engineering professions in the weeks to come.  Great things are happening at ASM…and our student members are at the forefront!

ASM INTERNATIONAL EMERGING PROFESSIONALS PROGRAM

Do you know an Emerging Professional within the ASM community? Are you an Emerging Professional who wants to learn more about ASM committee involvement?

In recognition of the importance of young professionals to the future of ASM International, we are seeking recently graduated ASM members (one to five years post graduation) to make up our first class of emerging professionals! Each year, this committee will organize and execute a program for the ASM Annual Meeting held at MS&T, giving its members first hand experience with the inner workings of an ASM committee. Emerging professionals will have the opportunity to interact with and learn from a diverse group of professionals who are acknowledged leaders within ASM International and within the field.

This program is designed to build loyalty to ASM International among young professionals. ASM is embracing young professionals and assisting them in the transition from student member to professional member. ASM will pay up to $500.00 for both hotel and airfare for an emerging professional to attend the ASM Annual Meeting. Prior to the meeting, the recipient receive a schedule of activities s/he is invited to attend. An RSVP is required of the award recipient. Not only does involvement serve as a precursor to further ASM committee participation, this award can be included in the emerging professional’s resume. Induction into a class of emerging professionals gives the recipient immediate camaraderie and friendship within the society.

Please submit an application package consisting of:

  1. A current resume highlighting prior interest in ASM, demonstrated through participation in a student chapter, local chapter, or conference.
  2. A one-page essay (typed and double-spaced) addressing the aspects of ASM that most interest you, specifically which committees you would like to become involved with in the future. Please address the following points:
    • What experiences led to your interest in this program?
    • What qualities, characteristics and skills do you possess that make you a strong candidate for the Emerging Professionals Program?
    • What do you hope to learn/gain from this program?
  3. One to two letters of recommendation

Please send your application package via mail or e-mail by July 3, 2006, to:
