Leadership Days 2006 a Success

“It’s everything I was told it would be and more! I wish my whole executive committee could have come to Leadership Days.”
That’s a quote from one of the attendees of the 2006 Leadership Days event sponsored by the ASM Chapter Council. The three-day program incorporated the fourth New Officer Boot Camp, and welcomed chapter leaders to Cleveland from as far away as western Canada, India and Finland. Altogether 95 attendees made the weekend a true success.
With topics ranging from chapter best practices to by-laws improvements, the chapter leaders learned the society’s latest efforts, and how these advances will impact them directly and indirectly. Under the spotlight for this coming year are the various “Community Websites” that will be introduced as part of ASM’s Global Community Information Network. Eventually, this network will provide chapters with new and exciting technologies that will support the way their local memberships interact, use information and participate as a chapter. Watch Chapter Nexus and ASM eNews for further announcements and details.
ASM President Reza Abbaschian, FASM, addressed attendees on Friday evening, highlighting the society’s Strategic Plan, which is based on “big, innovative, breakthrough thinking.” Dr. Abbaschian also recognized our society’s most successful chapters by presenting Five, Four and Three Star Awards. On Saturday night, he recognized the following chapters as Chapters of Excellence:
Category I (<100):
Chennai Chapter – India
Category II (100-199):
Twin Tier Chapter – New York
Category III (200-299):
Peoria Chapter – Illinois
Category IV (300-499):
Cincinnati Chapter – Ohio
Category V (>500):
Metro NY-NJ Chapter
New for this year, Leadership Days attendees voted on the Outstanding Chapter Newsletter Award, which was taken home by the Cincinnati Chapter.
Additional coverage of Leadership Days, images from the event and presentation follow-ups will be available soon via the ASM website, so stay tuned for more details.
Next year, Leadership Days will be held in Salt Lake City!
Over the years, many ASM chapters have suggested that it would be beneficial for them to be able to attend Leadership Days at a “western” location, as compared with our Cleveland headquarters in the eastern U.S. To study the matter, the Chapter Council polled the various Chapter districts, asking for their input into the issue and to identify potential sites for Leadership Days.
To test the idea, the ASM Chapter Council, after a ballot of districts, has announced that Leadership Days 2007 will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah. This gives our western chapters the opportunity to bring more members to the event, just as eastern chapters have been able to bring more members to Cleveland in past years.
If this idea proves successful, Leadership Days could move to other locations, leveraging larger local participation as the event moves from site to site. One proposal is for Cleveland to host Leadership Days during even-numbered years, while other chapters and locations host during odd-numbered years.
“Our challenge will be to deliver the same dynamic impact we have through our Saturday evening event at Materials Park with the Eisenman Materials Camp students and mentors,” said J.J. Letcavits, Chapter Council Chair. “This gives us an opportunity to develop new camps and strengthen ASM’s impact in new locations.”
J.J. said that the announcement about Salt Lake City in 2007 shows that the Council listens to the needs of chapters. “If we can move Leadership Days and strengthen our chapters, then it’s well worth the effort to try this,” he said.
NEW STAFF MEMBER AT ASM INTERNATIONAL
Scott Giesler joins Team ASM
Scott Giesler joined the staff at Materials Park in June to fill the newly-created position of Society Programs Coordinator. In this position, Scott is responsible for membership recruitment and retention strategies and will be working with local leaders to coordinate the ASM Materials Camp for students. Scott brings 20 years of experience in not-for-profit organization management to ASM International, having been responsible for membership development and chapter relations, training program development and certification in previous positions.
“In my first few weeks at ASM I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in the Eisenman Materials Camp and to actively participate in Leadership Days,” says Scott Giesler. “It’s been a pleasure meeting members, and I’ve been impressed to see the member excitement for the Materials Camps, local chapters and materials science in general.”
Scott is available to assist you with your chapter membership efforts and to help in organizing a Materials Camp. He can be contacted at 440-338-5151 ext. 5655 or scott.giesler@asminternational.org.
WELCOME TO “MEMBERSHIP MATTERS”
This new addition to ASM Chapter Nexus focuses on membership recruitment and retention strategies, providing informative articles and a forum for chapter leaders to exchange membership development ideas and strategies. This first article highlights a new initiative announced at Leadership Days, the “Membership Challenge,” an opportunity for all chapters to coordinate their membership recruitment efforts with ASM International. To submit ideas for articles on your chapter’s membership initiatives, contact Scott Giesler, ASM Society Programs Coordinator, at: 440-338-5151 ext. 5655 or scott.giesler@asminternational.org.

This Month’s Topic: Membership Challenge – A new program to better coordinate membership development efforts between chapters and ASM International, and to identify good prospects for focused membership recruitment efforts was introduced to Chapter leaders during Leadership Days 2006.
“The concept is simple,” says Roger Jones, ASM Membership Committee member. “All you need to do is identify prospective members, provide their names and contact information as best you can to the Society Programs staff, and we’ll see that a personalized membership packet is sent to the prospective members and follow-up with them periodically over the next few months to encourage them to join.”
In addition to the general mail and electronic membership marketing annually conducted by ASM, this list will be treated as hot prospects and receive additional, personalized membership recruitment communications.
All chapter chairs will be receiving an e-mail message later this month with complete information. If you have questions about the program, please contact Scott Giesler at scott.geisler@asminternational.org.

ASM EMERGING PROFESSIONALS UPDATE
The ASM Membership Committee proudly introduces the inaugural class of the Emerging Professionals Program! This exciting initiative is designed to increase communication and activity between emerging professionals and ASM International.
As stated in the Lifelong Learning Critical Issue of our Strategic Plan, ASM needs to engage young professionals and assist them in the transition from student member to professional member. The target audience for this program is members who have recently graduated (1-5 years after graduation) and recently begun their careers.
At MS&T ’06 in Cincinnati this October, ASM will introduce the inaugural class of Emerging Professionals to the entire Materials Science & Technology community. Please join with us in congratulating:
Patrick Anderson, The Timken Company, Canton, Ohio

MATERIALS CAMPS – YOUR CHAPTER CAN BUILD EXCITEMENT FOR THE FUTURE OF MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
What does it take for a chapter to sponsor a Materials Camp? How can I recruit students to attend? Can a small chapter present a successful Materials Camp? Can we team up with other chapters to present a regional camp? What does the ASM Foundation provide to help my chapter host a Materials Camp? These questions and many more were addressed during a “Materials Camp Best Practices” Round Table Session held during Leadership Days 2006. With over 43 Materials Camps planned for 2006, ranging from one day “mini camps” to full week residential programs, we shared lots of great ideas about how to run a successful “Materials Camp” program in your chapter.
A special “Thank You” to these panel members who shared their knowledge and experiences:
• Chris Craven, New England Regional Mini Materials Camp - Students
• Sandra DeVincent-Wolf, Pittsburgh MS & T Mini Camp – Students
• Scott Giesler, Society Programs Coordinator—ASM Foundation/ASMI Staff
• Matt Perricone – Albuquerque Residential Camp – Teachers
• Ann Wysock – Lehigh Valley Commuter Camp – Students
• Peg Jones, Chapter Council - Moderator
“It was great to see the interest and excitement of the round table participants and panel members,” says Scott Giesler, ASM Society Programs Coordinator. “With the combination of background information and resources found on the Foundation’s web site, sharing of experiences by the panel members, and the assistance and support available through the Foundation, chapter leaders have the fundamental tools they need to host a successful Materials Camp program.”
Presentations from Round Table panelists, as well as other Materials Camp planning resources, are available at the ASM Foundation web site or contact Scott Giesler, Society Programs Coordinator, at 440-338-5151, ext. 5655, or via e-mail: scott.giesler@asminternational.org.
You may also find the planning materials and example experiments used in the Pittsburgh camp helpful. They are available at www.asmpittsburgh.org/matcamp.html.
If your chapter has Materials Camp experimental procedures, budgets, promotional brochures, or other resources that would help other chapters start a Materials Camp, please send a copy to Scott Giesler so we can post them on the Foundation website for other Chapters’ use.
