OCTOBER 2005
2005 LEADERSHIP DAYS WRAP-UP
ASM International’s Chapter Council completed another successful Leadership Days event for Chapter leaders held at the Embassy Suites in Cleveland from August 12th through the 14th. This year, among the 74 attendees representing 51 chapters, there were representatives from the United States, Switzerland, India, and Canada. Representatives from the SCTE Pittsburgh Chapter and the newly forming EDFAS Lone Star Chapter also participated.

The ten Chapter Council District Representatives in attendance led primary sessions as well as conducting one-on-one meetings with chapter members and guiding break-out sessions during the three day event. Dr. Bhakta B. Rath, FASM and ASM President spoke at the opening session and provided insight to the passion and future of ASM. Dr. Dianne Chong, ASM Trustee and Chapter Council Board Liaison presented the process and direction of the society’s strategic plan, while incoming Trustee, Sue Baik-Kromalic participated in the entire event, demonstrating the on-going commitment of the Board to the success and future of the ASM Chapter Network.
Roger Jones of Solar Atmospheres and Riad Asfahani of U.S. Steel presented sessions on national-level committees, Membership and Programming respectively. The highest rated sessions of the event by the attendees were the Best Practices sessions, wherein participants were able to review their own chapter activities and present their best and brightest activities, as well as inviting input on how to improve their challenging aspects. Chapter Council volunteers, Arvid Casler, J.J. Letcavits, Melissa Mellen, Claudia Rawn, Peg Jones, Bernard Bewlay, Rich Lynch, Bill Livesay, Greg Petrus, and David Fry also led sessions and provided invaluable direction and guidance.
“Membership in ASM is all about connecting with each other and sharing technical expertise. This event allowed the chapters to do the same thing… learning from each other,” said one chapter leader.
All participants traveled to Materials Park for the annual Dinner Under the Dome, where the leaders were able to witness the future of the society in the presentations of the Materials Camp students and mentors, as they presented their research. Following dinner, J.J. Letcavits, incoming Chapter Council Chair presented the 5 Chapter of Excellence Awards to the following chapters:
Essays with respective winners below:
Category I: Chennai Chapter
Category II: Twin Tier Chapter
Category III: Peoria Chapter
Category IV: Oak Ridge Chapter
Category V: Metro New York – New Jersey Chapter
Sunday concluded the event with participants building their own schedule around meetings encompassing sessions about the Material Advantage student program, national committees, education courses and an informative Materials Camp panel discussion covering the unique formats and experiences/challenges of hosting chapters.

NEW!!! BEST PRACTICES AND SUCCESSES NEWSLETTER
The best of what ASM Chapters are doing!
ASM International’s Chapter Council is proud to be able to showcase our chapter’s Best Practices and Successes for all to receive through our new Best Practices and Successes newsletter.
During Leadership Days 2005, held in Cleveland, OH, many of our professional chapters were given the opportunity to provide a brief introduction about what programs and initiatives have proven successful for their chapter. Due to the overwhelming response from participants, Chapter Council would like to share this information with all of our members so these stories may provide opportunities for: networking, learning about what works and what doesn’t, program development, idea sharing, student programs, technical meetings/attendance, educational initiatives, collaborations/joint meetings, and to raise overall awareness of what other chapters are doing.
The release of this newsletter will begin in November and will contain new submissions quarterly. If you have any additional questions, require further assistance, or to submit your chapters Best Practices and Successes please contact Candace Cunningham, Chapter Relations Administrator at Chapters@asminternational.org.
The schedule for each releases is as follows:
November 30, 2005 (submissions due by November 1)
February 28, 2006 (submissions due by February 1)
May 30, 2006 (submissions due by May 1)
August 30, 2006(submissions due by August 1)

HAVE YOU TRIED A NEW OFFICER TOOL LATELY?
Tool of the month - Mailing Labels
The Officer’s Tools option, located under Chapters/Committees, is a tool that is designed to make information and options available to the chapter officers at any time for their convenience. These tools can only be accessed by the chair, vice chair, secretary, treasurer, membership chair and online membership chair. The reason for limiting these resources to specific positions is to maintain our standard of security and confidentiality of our member’s information. In each Nexus, we will include a set of instructions that will guide you through one of our Officer’s Tools. In this issue are instructions for generating mailing labels for your chapter mailings.
To Create Mailing Labels:
First, download your chapter roster by logging in with your member ID and password.
Go to Chapters/Committees and click on the Download your roster option which will prompt you through the rest of the procedures.
Download the Label Set-up which is located within the Officer’s Tools. You will be asked to choose the chapter or committee you need and that will bring you to the page where you can download the label set up. Here you will also find a downloadable set of instructions to guide you through creating your labels.
If you have any additional questions or need further assistance, please contact Candace Cunningham, Administrator, Chapter Relations & Membership, who will be happy to help you at 440/338-5151 x5651 or by email Chapters@asminternational.org.
