Planning a 2007 Materials Camp?
Let the ASM Materials Education Foundation Know
If your Chapter is planning to hold a Materials Camp during 2007, the ASM Foundation would like to know the type of Camp, dates, times and coordinators as soon as possible to facilitate planning and funding for next year. The Foundation Board meets on December 1-2, and will be approving initial 2007 funding at that meeting.
To confirm your Materials Camp or if you have questions about the Materials Camp program, contact ASM Foundation staff:
Membership Matters - Strategies to Engage New Members
Strong, professional societies continually recruit new members and focus on engaging them in the organization. During 2006 alone, ASM anticipates more than 6,500 new members will join the Society.
Once a new member joins, the focus needs to be on making that member feel welcome and a part of ASM. A welcome package with a variety of information on member benefits and services is sent from ASM, but your Chapter can go a long way to extend this welcome on a local, more personal level.
The monthly Chapter Change Report provided to the Chapter Chair, Vice Chair, Sec/Treasurer, Membership Chair, and Online Membership Chair highlights “New and Transferred In” members for follow-up by the Chapter. Included is a variety of contact information for each new member, such as full name and title, company/business address, e-mail address and phone number.
With this information in hand, here are a few general suggestions to help engage the new member:
- A message of welcome with the Chapter meeting schedule should be forwarded to the new member by the Chapter Chair, Secretary or Membership Chair.
- A phone call extending a personal invitation to the next meeting should follow. If the new member is unable to attend, be sure to follow-up with highlights of the meeting and to invite to the next meeting. (This also is an excellent opportunity to learn of the new member’s interests and areas of expertise.)
- Include their name of the new member in the Chapter newsletter or other communications, so that all members are aware of the new member joining the Chapter and have the opportunity to also extend a word of welcome.
- Assign a “Buddy” to introduce the new member at meetings and address the member’s questions ranging from proper meeting attire to how to access information through ASM.
- Give the new member opportunities to contribute, network and become engaged through committee participation, informal networking groups or by volunteering for Chapter projects.
- Follow-up with the new member periodically, asking about the membership experience/value and directing the new member to Society programs and services that will be helpful.
Would you like to share your Chapter’s strategies to engage new members with other Chapter leaders? E-mail Scott Giesler, Society Programs Coordinator, at scott.giesler@asminternational.org. Your ideas will be included in future Chapter Nexus newsletters.
