DECEMBER 2005
CHAPTER LEADERS PROVIDE VALUED INPUT IN SHAPING ASM STRATEGIC PLAN!!!
Huge, innovative, breakthrough thinking is shaping an exciting future for ASM International!
BY JJ Letcavits, Chapter Council Chair
On behalf of the ASM Chapter Council, I'm pleased to present our society's 2005-2006 Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan is available as a low-res PDF file that can be viewed, downloaded and printed from www.asminternational.org/strategicplan. A printed copy of the Strategic Plan has also been sent to Chapter Chairs and Vice Chairs for their reference.
You'll notice that many of the ASM members who participated on this year's Strategic Planning Team are well-known leaders within the ASM Chapter network. We realize that our society's plan can't just be a forward-looking document to guide "the whole society" -- it must also be applied by our Chapters at the local grassroots level. Our challenge as Chapter Chairs is to make sure that our Chapters' strategic objectives align with these ASM objectives, to add our support to the overall plan and to share in the benefits of our society's growth and success.
You'll also notice that we have made considerable progress against the six original Critical Issues -- so much so, that our Action Plans have evolved into three key areas of initiative:
Global Community Information Network - To be THE resource for materials information and knowledge, ASM must build the necessary Information Technology Infrastructure to deliver and support the Information/Community Experience (ASM’s Integrated Enterprise). We must also find partners and acquire new content to deliver needed information through this network.
Emerging Technologies - This is an expanded scope to respond more rapidly to changes and developments that are significantly impacting individual and organizations served by ASM. We must be able to initiate the development of new products and services from concepts that emerge from our new identification and evaluation process.
Lifelong Learning and Education - By delivering programs that provide value for ASM members in their personal and professional development, we can cultivate new members and grow our society. We must develop opportunities for lifelong – “cradle to grave” – education.
So that all ASM Chapters can reflect the priorities set in the Strategic Plan, I ask that you read the Strategic Plan, share it with your leadership and incorporate those actions that apply to your Chapter in your strategic and action planning as soon as possible. If you have any questions or comments regarding the overall plan or any of the specific actions, please bring them to my attention and to the attention of your Chapter Council representative.
With the support of our Chapter leadership, we are building a stronger ASM for ourselves and for future members. Thank you for your continuing efforts.
DECEMBER 15TH - DEADLINE FOR NOMINATING COMMITTEE NOMINATIONS
As the year 2005 winds down, you have the opportunity to visualize opportunities in 2006, and to identify the cadre of ASM members who will lead this Society to their attainment. Please reflect upon your knowledge of our Society, our mission, and our strategic plan to nominate colleagues whom are well-suited to serve on the 2006 Nominating Committee.
This committee will discharge one of the greatest responsibilities of the ASM charter -- the review and recommendation of ASM members who have the knowledge, skill and ability to serve as Vice President and three nominees to serve as Trustees. Expenses for those nominees selected are completely covered by ASM due to the importance of this committee's charge.
The nomination process is simple, and requires the completion of a 2-page Nomination Form for each candidate with 2 letters of support. We look forward to your assistance in making available to the officers of ASM a qualified pool of member-leaders from which a committee of nine will be selected to serve with the 2006 Nominating Committee Chairman, Dr. Gordon Geiger.
Deadline for nominations is December 15th. The nomination form and instructions are available at www.asminternational.org/governance. Contact Leslie Taylor at 440/338-5151 ext. 5500, or via leslie.taylor@asminternational.org for further details or to answer any questions!

ASM CHAPTER COUNCIL ACTIVITIES REPORT
There's a group of ASM leaders that support the ASM Strategic Plan and help our Chapters stay aligned with the Plan's objectives: ASM's Chapter Council. Under the leadership of J.J. Letcavits of the ASM Columbus Chapter (who has succeeded past chair Melissa Mellen of the Northern New England Chapter), the Chapter Council is also responsible for contributing new program and service ideas that support our chapters' efforts. Here's an update of their recent activity:
• Planning is proceeding for ASM Leadership Days 2006, to be held next August in Cleveland. We're expecting another successful event, as Leadership Days 2005 attracted 80 chapter leaders to Cleveland to learn more about what it takes to run a successful chapter. Highlights included a visit to Materials Park for the "dinner under the dome" and student presentations from the Eisenman Materials Camp.
• Arvid Casler, District XIV Chapter Council Representative, is beginning to develop a regional "mini-Leadership Days," which will provide specialized leadership training in a more localized region, for those chapters who are unable to attend Leadership Days or who are interested in additional training.
• As part of its continuing efforts to strengthen ASM’s identity and brand recognition, the Chapter Council introduced the "Chapter Specific Logo" to all ASM chapters last year. By using the logos, we create a more consistent and recognizable identity for our society throughout the world. This year, Chapter Council has amended the Annual Report of the Quality Recognition Program to make the logos' use mandatory.
• The University Outreach Subcommittee is exploring new ways to excite students about the benefits of ASM -- particularly through engaging the faculty at colleges and universities.
• Chapter Council is constantly looking for ways to continuously improve the methods in which chapters operate, and a step towards this can be seen in the broad changes to the Chapter-level By-laws. This set of changes is designed to increasingly protect our chapters, our society and our local leaders. These changes are going through an approval process and chapters can expect to see them soon.
These are just a few of the many activities performed by the Chapter Council. As the chapter year progresses, you can look for a number of important initiatives from the Chapter Council in their continual effort to train, educate and reach out to our chapter leaders.
TIME TO SUBMIT YOUR IRS 1099 INFORMATION!!!

ASM will then process the 1099 forms for your Chapter and send it to the IRS. ASM must report this information to the IRS by January 31, 2006 so please send the above information to ASM no later than January 15, 2006.
