CHECK OUT THE PROGRAM FOR LEADERSHIP DAYS 2007 IN SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH!

Chapter Council recently finalized the Leadership Days program and it is posted on the ASM website. This year, in addition to a full Chapter leadership program, we will be focusing on Material Camps. There will be three Material Camp breakout sessions offered on Saturday: Residential Camps, Commuter Camps and Mini Camps.

The Saturday night activity will be a K-12 outreach demo of Chapter activities and a poster session. Register today and join us August 2-5, 2007 at the Sheraton City Center Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah. All Chapters are required to send at least one representative to Leadership Days every other year to remain in good standing. Chapter Council decides to change the venue this year for our west coast attendees’ convenience. Leadership days will return to Cleveland in 2008.

Materials Radio Podcast Competition —
Tell the World about the Wonders of Materials!

Do you know a Material Advantage student who is interested in reaching out and educating younger students? The ASM K-12 Education Subcommittee has developed a competition for Material Advantage students to achieve just that! By creating two minute audio programs about the wonders of material science, these students will be part of a new program to teach middle school students about the materials around them. All of the audio programs will be park of an ongoing radio program dedicated to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. Each accepted audio program will receive a $500 prize. The deadline for entries is May 15th, 2007. For complete details and instructions forms, please visit www.materialsradio.org or e-mail students@asminternational.org. We look forward to hearing your view of the materials world around you.

MATERIALS CAMP® LEADERS SHARE “BEST PRACTICES” DURING WEB FORUMS

Participants in two Materials Camp® Web Forums — Teacher and Student — held in March shared their experiences and best practices in key areas of Camp organization, promotion, recruitment and follow-up. Included among the tips and highlights:

  • The volunteer team to manage a Camp should consist of 3-6 members with the lab manager fulfilling the critical position of managing all the keys. In addition to Chapter members, university teachers and students are excellent team resources.
  • The student activities need to be hands-on…things that they can’t do at home, messy things or breaking things.
  • Recruiting attendees requires creativity, coordination and persistence. Past participants can be great recruiters; A waiting list of extra students/teachers to fill open spots due to last minute cancellations.
  • Fundraising also requires creativity. Build on relationships such as those with Chapter Sustaining Members, passion for the Materials Camp program and “eye-to-eye” contact with the donor. One Chapter held a fashion show and raised approximately $1,000 for their Camp.
  • The Graduation Ceremony is an excellent opportunity to recognize those completing the Camp and to spread the word by inviting the local press, teachers, principals, family members and others.
  • Follow-up with the Camp graduates is also important. Provide a “cookbook” of lesson ideas/experiments to the teachers, assign a volunteer mentor to stay in touch with the students, and recognize Campers at a Chapter meeting.

Thank you to all the Camp organizers who participated in the discussions.

Washington State University Material Advantage Chapter
Reaching Out to the Community

At Washington State University, the Material Advantage chapter has a longstanding reputation of excellence. During the past semester, they have continued their excellent community service events.

Community service is an important part of the chapter and to participate, members maintain a stretch of State Route-27 for the Adopt-a-Highway program. This is done twice every year in the early fall and early spring. After picking up litter, members get to enjoy the “Moscow Mile,” a six-foot burrito from Patty’s Kitchen in Moscow, Id.

On one Saturday every semester, they have MSE Day where they conduct fun demonstrations and activities about materials science. This past semester, 18 students – including perspective members – and 2 parents (a first for this event) participated. These activities included making their own Cougar keychains, liquid nitrogen racquetballs (demonstration of polymer Tg), drill rod heat treatment (quenched vs. furnace-cooled) and an SEM demonstration. After the day’s events, students were invited to Dr. Bahr’s house for a poker party. The poker party is a perennial favorite in WSU’s Material Advantage program because of the opportunity to socialize with professors on an informal basis.

The Material Advantage chapter also provides opportunity for professional development. During the year, members tour several local industries to learn about their specific operations and how engineering works in the business world. The Wagstaff tour in Spokane, WA was held in conjunction with the Inland Empire Chapter of ASM International. In the near future, they will also be touring an anodizing facility. In addition to being a learning experience, the tour also provides information for one of their fundraising projects ― making anodized cougar keychains.

Part of their chapter development focuses on helping younger students become interested in material science. MSE Day plays a role in this through school visits. In an effort to reach out to high school students, many of their members visit their former high schools during Thanksgiving and spring breaks. They speak to students in science classes or the occasional materials science class about life at WSU and the field of materials science. Each year, these visits result in a few incoming freshmen who are interested in majoring in MSE.

Representation at national conferences is also important to the WSU chapter of Material Advantage. Each year members are encouraged to attend the MS&T conference and the TMS conference. This year they’re very excited to have a team to compete in the first-ever Materials Bowl at the TMS conference in Orlando.

One of the most enjoyed chapter event is their annual Martin Luther King Jr. weekend ski trip. This gives them the opportunity to relax for three days and not worry about the coming homework. For the past two years they’ve rented a house in Kellogg, ID near Silver Mountain Resort, just to relax and have fun ― even if they don’t ski or snowboard.

The last event of each year is their annual Paper Night, hosted by the Inland Empire Chapter of ASM, and alternates between the Washington State University and the University of Idaho. Three students from each school are chosen to present their research projects and compete against each other for cash prizes.

If there are any questions about the club or any of their activities, please e-mail them at msewsu@yahool.com. They’re looking forward to hearing from you!

Report Chapter Activities to ASM News

Chapter officers take note: ASM News is always in the market for stories and photos about chapter activities. Submit copy and photo captions in an e-mail or as an attachment in Microsoft Word. Photos should be provided as separate, high-resolution JPEG or tiff file attachments (image width: at least 3 inches at 300 dpi resolution). Glossy prints are also acceptable.

Send stories and photos to: Don Baxter, Managing Editor, Advanced Materials & Processes®, ASM International, 9639 Kinsman Road, Materials Park, OH 44073-0002, 440-338-5151, ext. 5558 or don.baxter@asminternational.org.

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS

RETENTION TIPS: USING THE CHAPTER CHANGE REPORT

What is the most important role of your Chapter’s Membership Committee? Retaining current members! Without a strong member base, the opportunities to grow your Chapter through new member acquisition are limited.

Each month ASM Chapter Membership Committee Chairs receive a Chapter Change Report from ASM International. This report provides a variety of information, including members who have lapsed in paying their dues. Member services are cut off and the membership is canceled after 120 days.

Using the Chapter Change Report information a member of the Chapter Membership Committee should be in contact with Chapter members who have lapsed, reminding them of the membership value and to engage them in the programs and activities of your local Chapter and ASM International. Determine if there are concerns or complaints which can be resolved. Often, a member doesn’t fully understand the value and variety of member programs and services available and that extra information provided from a peer will result in a renewed membership.

Officers can access this report on the ASM website under Officer Tools.

For information on membership programs and services, copies of the new ASM Guide to Member Benefits and Resources or general membership questions, contact Scott Giesler, Society Programs Coordinator at scott.giesler@asminternational.org or at 440-338-5151, ext. 5655.
