Membership Matters

LOOKING FOR CHAPTER LEADERS TO SHARE MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES, CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

As a result of the combined membership development efforts of local Chapter leaders, the ASM Membership Committee, the staff and individual members, your Society enjoyed a fourth year of membership growth in 2006. Thank you to all who supported this effort!

To build on this success and to discover and support membership recruitment and retention strategies for 2007 and beyond, a ½-day, facilitated teleconference to discuss membership development is in the early planning stages. The teleconference will be an opportunity for participants to learn from each other, gain a better understanding of membership recruitment and retention strategies coordinated by the ASM staff, and to provide input to the staff on membership marketing and communications.

“This will be a great opportunity to learn from each other and to help the ASM Membership Development Team shape its recruitment and retention activities to support local initiatives and have greater impact overall,” says Ken Davis, ASM Membership Committee Chair. “Participants will own this teleconference, recommending discussion topics, format, and even when it is held.”

If you would like to participate in this Membership Development Teleconference or to learn more, e-mail Scott Giesler, Society Programs Coordinator, by February 28th at scott.giesler@asminternational.org.

Material Advantage Chapters– Getting Involved!
University of Missouri-Rolla Material Advantage Chapter

The University of Missouri-Rolla Material Advantage Chapter has one main goal this semester: To get younger members of the Material Science and Engineering (MSE) department involved in their student group. We began by presenting to a freshman level course, Chemistry of Materials. The presentation consisted of an overview of MA, what this chapter does, and how students can get involved. A new activity that has already been implemented this year for UMR-MA members is “MSE sports.” MSE winter sporting events already scheduled or being planned, include volleyball, basketball, soccer, and bowling. The activities are meant to bring MSE students together outside of classes to get know each other and build lasting contacts.

UMR-MA will also be holding a racquetball tournament as their first fundraising event of the semester. Professors and students will be allowed to play, however, only students can win! The winner will receive a cash prize. As usual, we will be selling MSE and MA polo shirts as our second fundraiser. We plan sell 125 of the polo shirts for approximately $25.00 each.

The chapter had a great time at MS&T 2006, and to keep the excitement up this semester, we will be holding our own version of the student design competitions. Many students will prepare ceramic mugs, putters and balls. The competition will be held outside on campus later this semester in to show students of other disciplines a little about materials and the fun the MSE students have! The winner will receive a cash prize provided by UMR-MA, in the hopes that he/she will make another ceramic mug or putter and ball for MS&T 2007.

UMR-MA has been assisting the MSE department with outreach activities throughout the school year by holding a lab tour/demonstration training session this month for our members and giving lab tours and performing demonstrations for high school and elementary school students regularly this semester. The MSE department entertains approximately 1200 students and teachers every year.

NEXUS INSTRUCTIONS
How to get the most out of the Nexus and your officer tools and resources!

The Nexus is a quick point-of-reference for local chapter officers, to receive valuable information as well as quick links to commonly used tools and resources. If you are receiving the HTML version of the Nexus, you will see a list of “Quick Links” on the top left of the Chapter home page. These links are explained below. (Please note that many of these items require site login before you will be able to access.)

Update My Record – As you know, accurate information is vital to the success of a chapter and a society. Please take a moment to review your member information online and update any dated information.

Download My Roster – You have access to your chapter’s roster and can also retrieve your members’ information to run mailing labels.

Chapter Network List – This is a list of the active chapters in the ASM Network with links to their individual websites if they have them.

My Monthly Reports – Monthly reports?!? If you weren’t even aware of the monthly reports, now you have an easy way to locate them after your chapter meetings or your executive committee meetings!

My Operations Manual – Revised annually, this document is the cookbook for your chapter’s success. Take a few minutes to review at least the Table of Contents. Many of the questions you have right now are probably answered in this book.

Speaker’s Directory – Looking for just the right speaker for your technical program? Use our online tool to find the perfect speaker.

E-mail My Members – This tool, housed at the ASM website, allows you to send simple text messages to your entire organization (except those without e-mails), maintain their security and privacy, and get your message out in one burst.

ASK Megan! – Have a question? Have a concern? Need some guidance? Megan Herrmann is the Chapter Relations Administrator at ASM Headquarters. If she doesn’t know the answer, she’ll work tirelessly until she finds it for you. Contact Megan at 800-336-5152, ext. 5651 or megan.herrmann@asminternational.org.
