ASM CHAPTER NEXUS
Volume 7 Issue 6
MARCH 2007

ANNUAL REPORT: Opportunity for Bonus Points!

This year your Chapter has the opportunity to earn 10 bonus points when you submit your annual report by June 15, 2007. You can add your bonus point in section II of the Quality Report at the end. All reports must be submitted by June 30, 2007 to be reviewed and processed for 3-, 4- and 5-star awards. The early submission deadline has been added to allow time for ASM and Chapter Council to make preparations for Leadership Days. If you submit forms after June 30 we can not guarantee your Chapter will receive your award at Leadership Days (it will be mailed to you following the event). Please keep these dates in mind if your Chapter is planning to submit an essay for consideration in the Chapter of Excellence Competition.

Report forms will be mailed out to your Chapter at the end of March. If you have any questions or need assistance filling out your form, please contact Megan Herrmann at megan.herrmann@asminternational.org or your Chapter Council District Representative.

Nominations Sought for 2007-2008 ASM Student Trustees

Do you know a Material Advantage student who is driven and looking for a phenomenal experience with ASM International?

ASM International is accepting nominations for the next class of three Material Advantage Members to provide their insights and ideas as official Representatives to the Board!

“My advice to other Material Advantage members it to take advantage of this opportunity. Not many other students get the chance to be flown around the country to new cities,to interact with a number of professionals in their discipline. You will learn a great deal about ASM and have a lot of fun doing it. You don’t have to understand everything about ASM right now; you have years to experience it! It has been a wonderful experience and I am thankful that ASM has given me this opportunity." ~Lindsey Campbell, ASM Student Trustee 2006-2007

Who Qualifies? In order to be eligible, the student must be a Material Advantage student member, undergraduate or graduate student, during the 2007-2008 academic year.
To apply, submit an application package consisting of:
1. A current resume
2. A two-page essay (typed and double-spaced) addressing your interest in participating in the program. Please address the following points:
o What experiences led to your interest in this program?
o What qualities, characteristics and skills do you possess that will make you a strong candidate to serve as Material Advantage Representative to the ASM Board?
o What do you hope to learn/gain from this program?
3. 2-3 letters of recommendation from faculty
Nominations are due to the ASM Chapter Relations Department no later than April 2, 2007.
Please contact Candace Cunningham at students@asminternational.org or visit www.asminternational.org/board for more information.

2007 International Metallography Poster Contest

Attention ASM Chapter Members:
The International Metallographic Society (IMS), an affiliate society of ASM International, invites all ASM Chapter members to enter the 2007 International Metallography Contest and take advantage of the opportunity to win the grand prize of $3000. Visit the IMS website for further details at www.internationalmetallographicsociety.org/contest.html

The deadline for entries is July 25, 2007.

Over the past several years the number of submissions to the contest in all categories has been decreasing. Due to fewer entries, many lost an opportunity to win the grand prize of the Jacquet-Lucas Award, $3000, and publication in the ASM International Advanced Materials & Processing® magazine.

For examples of last year’s winning posters, please visit:
www.internationalmetallographicsociety.org/06winners.html.

The entries will be on exhibit and judged at the Microscopy and Microanalysis Conference in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, August 6 - 9, 2007.

University of Tennessee of Knoxville Materials Advantage Sponsor an Egg Drop Contest for Engineers Day 2007

The College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee has been hosting Engineers Day for almost 100 years. Students from local high schools toured the laboratory and facilities of the various Engineering Departments and participate in contests such as the Quiz Bowl and a bridge building contest. This yearm the Materials Advantage along with the student branch of the Society of Plastic Engineers sponsored an Egg Drop Contest. The rules and registration forms were provided in advance of Engineers Day and students came equipped with their designs in hand. Over the course of the morning over 41 eggs were dropped. Scores were calculated from the equation:

W = Weight of the Device in Grams
N = Number of Parts
DZ = Drop Zone
EIF = Egg Integrity Factor (1 is not cracked or 0 if cracked)

The lowest nonzero score was the winner so the design needed to be lightweight and accurate and have few parts. First Place was awarded to Amanda Finkes from Francis Howell North High School in St. Charles, Missouri, Second Place went to Chris King and Courtney Capes from Creek High School in Charlotte, Tennessee, and Third Place went to a team from Alcoa, Tennessee that included Julie Pender, Stefanie Pender, Colleen Barnett, Austin Womac, Cody Blackford and Niki Walker.

The Nexus is a quick point-of-reference for local chapter officers, to receive valuable information as well as quick links to commonly used tools and resources. If you are receiving the HTML version of the Nexus, you will see a list of “Quick Links” on the top left of the Chapter home page. These links are explained below. (Please note that many of these items require site login before you will be able to access.)

Update My Record – As you know, accurate information is vital to the success of a chapter and a society. Please take a moment to review your member information online and update any dated information.

Download My Roster – You have access to your chapter’s roster and can also retrieve your members’ information to run mailing labels.

Chapter Network List – This is a list of the active chapters in the ASM Network with links to their individual websites if they have them.

My Monthly Reports – Monthly reports?!? If you weren’t even aware of the monthly reports, now you have an easy way to locate them after your chapter meetings or your executive committee meetings!

My Operations Manual – Revised annually, this document is the cookbook for your chapter’s success. Take a few minutes to review at least the Table of Contents. Many of the questions you have right now are probably answered in this book.
