Medical experts at Sunderland University in England may have found the key to turning back the brain’s biological clock and reversing the effects of dementia and memory loss. Researchers say that we age because our cells lose the desire to regenerate and repair themselves. However, near infrared light, at a wavelength of 1072 nm, causes the cells to regain this desire, and the cells begin to repair themselves. This helmet generates the correct wavelength, and wearing it for just ten minutes a day “can improve learning performance and kick-start the cognitive function of the brain.”

Khare to Lead
Nominating Committee

To select a nominee for Vice President for 2008-2009 -- who will serve as President of ASM International the following year -- members of the Nominating Committee have been selected by the Officers of the Society.

Ashok K. Khare, FASM, president, Ash Khare Consulting LLC, Warren, Pa., has been elected chair of the Nominating Committee by the ASM Board of Trustees.

Mr. Khare served on the ASM Board of Trustees from 1993-96 and as ASM President for 1999-2000. In 1990, he received the first Allan Ray Putnam Service Award. In 2007, he received ASM's Honorary Membership Award.

Compare Titanium and
Steel Grinding Sparks



Hold any genuine titanium metal object to a grinding wheel (even a little grindstone on a Dremel tool will do), and it gives off a shower of brilliant white sparks unlike any softer common metal. The sparks are tiny pieces of cut titanium, and the friction of the grinder heats them until they burn white-hot. Hold a grindstone to the shackle of a "titanium" padlock from Master Lock, however, and you'll instead see the telltale fine, long, yellow sparks of high-carbon steel. Shorter yellow sparks show the sides to be a type of stainless steel.

A Rolls-Royce Trent 900-powered Airbus A380 has entered the record books as the first commercial aircraft to successfully complete a flight partly powered by synthetic, “gas-to-liquid” fuel. During the three-hour flight from Bristol to Airbus headquarters in Toulouse, three of the Trent 900s used standard aviation fuel, while the fourth engine operated with a mix of kerosene and liquid fuel derived from natural gas. The initiative was a partnership effort between Rolls-Royce, Airbus, and Shell.

Medtronic Inc. has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the Endeavor Zotarolimus-Eluting Coronary Stent System to be used in the treatment of coronary artery disease. The Endeavor data encompasses the largest, most wide-ranging patient population submitted to the FDA in support of a drug-eluting stent, including more than 4100 patients, followed up for as long as four years.
