Tactile Surface Pressure Indicting Sensor

Pressurex® reveals pressure
distribution and magnitude between any two contacting or mating surfaces. Pressurex® is a thin sensor film that instantaneously and permanently captures your surface pressure profile by virtue of its changing color. Conceptually similar to Litmus paper, the color Pressurex™ turns is directly proportional to the amount of force applied.

Lamp is Powered by Gravity

Called Gravia, this lamp is made of an acrylic column a little over four feet high. Designed by a student at Virginia Tech, the entire column glows when activated. The electricity is generated by the slow fall of a mass that spins a rotor. The resulting energy powers ten high-output LEDs that fire into the acrylic lens, creating a diffuse light. The light output is 600 to 800 lumens - roughly equal to a 40-watt incandescent bulb over a period of four hours.

The
Oscars
of
Materials
Science!

With the Oscars just awarded for motion picture excellence, it’s important to note that every year, ASM presents its own academy awards! Ours are among the most significant ways that we recognize the accomplishments of members.

“One of the greatest honors of an ASM President is to acknowledge the achievements of our colleagues during our annual Awards Banquet,” says ASM President Dr. Dianne Chong. “Not only is each award steeped in the traditions of ASM and our materials community...each honor is particularly valued by recipients because they were nominated by their peers.”

Now’s the time for ASM members to step up and nominate! From awards for teaching and research excellence…to recognition of lifelong contributions to the materials industry...President Chong encourages you to nominate a colleague today.

USAF Says Budgets Are Billions Short of What's Needed
From Air Force
Air Force officials are warning that unless their budget is increased dramatically, and soon, the military's high-flying branch won't dominate the skies as it has for decades. After more than six years of war in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Air Force's aging jet fighters, bombers, cargo aircraft, and gunships are at the breaking point, they say, and expensive, ultramodern replacements are needed fast.

News from AM&P

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have designed textile nanofibers covered with zinc oxide to fabricate nanowires that can generate electrical current via the piezoelectric effect. Combining current flow from many fiber pairs woven into a shirt or jacket could allow the wearer’s body movement to power a range of portable electronic devices. The fibers could also be woven into curtains, tents, or other structures to capture energy from wind motion, sound vibration, or other mechanical energy.

A new Metallurgy program is being introduced at the Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. The new program will award a B.S. degree in Technology with a specialization in Metallurgical Technology. The program will start in August 2008. Two courses have been approved so far, “Introduction to Metallurgy” and “Heat Treatment of Industrial Alloys.” The program is being developed by Dr. Zariff Chaudhury, a member of ASM International.

Purdue University engineers have developed a new aluminum-rich alloy that produces hydrogen by splitting water. The new alloy contains 95% aluminum and 5% of an alloy that is made of the metals gallium, indium, and tin. When immersed in water, the alloy splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, which immediately reacts with the aluminum to produce aluminum oxide.
