An Electron in Flight

Now it is possible to see an electron in flight. The movie shows how an electron rides on a light wave after just having been pulled away from an atom. This is the first time an electron has ever been filmed. With the use of a newly developed technology for generating short pulses from intense laser light, called attosecond pulses, scientists at the Lund University Faculty of Engineering in Sweden have managed to capture the electron in motion for the first time.

President Dianne Chong Visits Materials Park

During a recent visit to Materials Park, ASM President Dianne Chong, FASM, of The Boeing Company, described the broadening of our membership’s technical interests, from metals alone to metals and composites and ceramics and polymers. “We’re rooted in metals – I’m a metallurgist myself,” she said. “But there’s a growing number of folks who are working with other materials….’Everything is material,’ and ASM’s technical focus has broadened beyond metals.”

How to Move a Cobalt Atom

Researchers at IBM have developed a way to move atoms. This image shows an atomic force microscope tip measuring the force it takes to move a cobalt atom on a crystalline surface. The ability to measure the exact force needed to move individual atoms is one of the keys to designing and constructing the small structures that will enable future nanotechnologies.

ATI Titanium Alloy Tapped for Copter Tail Rotor Blade
Business Wire

Allegheny Technologies Inc. announces that its proprietary titanium alloy, ATI 425, has been adopted for a new prototype replacement tail rotor blade manufactured by Van Horn Aviation for commercial helicopters. Still under development, the VHA 206 series replacement tail rotor blade features a titanium root fitting and titanium abrasion strip.

IBM Using Self-Assembling Nanotechnology for Chip Insulators
International Herald Tribune
IBM is developing a new way to solve the problem of smaller chips sizes by using "self-assembling" nanotechnology to make better insulators and raise performance. Self-assembly involves creating air gaps, which are vacuums a few nanometers wide that keep the billions of tiny copper wires in a chip from touching one another, instead of putting down a layer of insulating material and trying to align it effectively.

News from AM&P

The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory has investigated nanophase nickel-zirconium alloys for electrically conductive coatings and catalyst supports in fuel cells. They found that thin films of the 55Ni45Zr alloy deposited by magnetron and radiofrequency co-sputtering of nickel and zirconium had a nanophase and nearly amorphous character that enabled it to resist corrosion.

Sandvik Steel has developed Sandvik Sanicro 25, an austenitic alloy with excellent high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance for ultrasupercritical coal-fired power plants. The main technique for reaching the very high elevated-temperature strength is precipitate strengthening through utilization of Nb(C,N), fine NbCrN, M23C6, and Cu-rich precipitates. High-temperature strength is also improved by the addition of tungsten.
