Ultra-High-Resolution Imaging of Non-Conductive Samples
The new ULTRA plus combines the unique detection capabilities of the proven ULTRA GEMINI series FE-SEM and a revolutionary charge compensation (CC) system for imaging of most critical non-conducting samples. The fully automatic charge compensator can be used in conjunction with all integrated detectors including EsB, Inlens, AsB and chamber mounted Everhart Thornley detector. For the first time non-conductive samples can be investigated in the ULTRA not only under low-voltage imaging conditions, but also at high voltage and high probe current.

Tactile Surface Pressure
Indicating Sensor
Pressurex reveals pressure distribution and magnitude between any two contacting or mating surfaces. Pressurex is a thin sensor film that instantaneously and permanently captures surface pressure profile by virtue of its changing color. Conceptually similar to Litmus paper - the color Pressurex turns is directly proportional to the amount of force applied.

Earth’s Core Is
Body-Centered-Cubic Iron!
It has long been known that the inner core of the earth is an iron sphere with a radius of about 745 miles. It makes perfect sense, then, that the iron should be body-centered-cubic. However, only recently has this been proven.
Scientists from Uppsala University in Sweden showed that elastic waves pass more rapidly through the core in directions that are parallel to the earth’s axis of rotation than in directions parallel to the equator, and this elastic anisotropy can only be explained by a bcc structure.

Voices of Youth Have Their Say
as ASM Board Seeks Student Representatives
Dr. Dianne Chong, FASM
President, ASM International
As we teach, so do we learn. I’m particularly proud of the progress of our Student Representatives on the Board program, a product of our Strategic Plan.
We started this program two years ago, and we’ve already seen tremendous input and enthusiasm from our youngest members, who have brought energy and ideas to the Board. They are also major contributors to our lifelong learning initiatives.

Scuba Diving Car
A concept car that can swim underwater at depths up to 30 feet has been developed by Rinspeed, Switzerland. Called the Squba, the car is powered by several electric motors driven by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. The rotating outlet jets, which enable steering the car underwater, are made of carbon nanotubes. Body panels are made of thermoplastic composites and carbon nanotubes. While underwater, the occupants breathe air from an integrated tank of compressed air.
