Atomizing Systems Supplies ‘Anti-Satellite’ Gas Atomizer
Atomising Systems Ltd. (ASL), Sheffield, UK, delivered what is said to be the world’s first “anti-satellite” gas-atomizing system to Castolin Eutectic Ireland Ltd. It supplies a wide range of special Ni, Co, and Fe alloy powders used in thermal spray, welding, and brazing processes.
DLC Coating Boosts Valve Lifter Performance
Hitachi Ltd., Tokyo, Japan, has developed a valve lifter incorporating a hydrogen-free DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating. Hitachi claims to have produced a highly reliable coating through the development of lapping and special washing technologies prior to the treatment.
New Materials Research Lab Develops Inorganic Optoelectronics

EMD Chemicals Inc., a subsidiary of Merck KGaA of Germany, will open a new research and development laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The new lab will elaborate new material concepts and application fields in the area of inorganic optoelectronics.

Toray Industries Inc. (TSE:3402), Teijin Ltd. (TSE:3401) and Mitsubishi Rayon Co. (TSE:3404) plan to jointly mass-produce recycled carbon fibre to promote the use of the strong yet lightweight material.

Researchers at the University of Warwick have found a way of producing carbon nanotubes in which they instantly form a highly sensitive ready made electric circuit. Carbon nanotubes potential as a super material is blighted by the fact that when first made they often take the form of an unprepossessing pile of sooty black mess in the bottom of a test tube.

A new hybrid hearing aid/cochlear implant device is reportedly being evaluated as part of a multi-site, national study by otolaryngologists at UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Tex. Already approved in Europe, the DUET Electric-Acoustic System, or EAS, targets borderline cases for which hearing aids don't adequately distinguish sounds, but for who some natural hearing remains.

A new ASTM International standard will enable composite end users and materials suppliers within the aerospace industry to carry out an important test for polymer matrix composites within guidelines set by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. The standard, D7028, Test Method for Glass Transition Temperature (DMA Tg) of Polymer Matrix Composites by Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee D30.04 on Lamina and Laminate Test Methods, part of ASTM Committee D30 on Composite Materials

The Thermal Spray Hall of Fame, established in 1993 by the Thermal Spray Society of ASM International, recognizes and honors outstanding leaders who have made significant contributions to the science, technology, practice, education, managements, and advancement of Thermal Spraying. Galactic Gem
A cluster brimming with millions of stars glistens like an iridescent opal in this image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. Called Omega Centauri, the sparkling orb of stars is like a miniature galaxy. It is the biggest and brightest of the 150 or so similar objects, called globular clusters, that orbit around the outside of our Milky Way galaxy. Stargazers at southern latitudes can spot the stellar gem with the naked eye in the constellation Centaurus.

Nominees Announced for ASM Board of Trustees
“There’s never been a more exciting time to serve on the Board of Trustees,” said ASM President Dr. Dianne Chong, FASM. “Our Trustees serve as a voice for our membership and help to shape our society’s future through their leadership of the implementation of our Strategic Plan.”
The nine Trustees of ASM work with the President, Vice President, Immediate Past President and Treasurer to direct the affairs of the society. Three new Trustees are elected by ASM’s membership every year, and each Trustee serves a three-year term.
