Sikorsky Aerospace Services has been awarded approximately $11.8 million in contracts with the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command for support work for Blackhawk UH-60A and UH-60L (pictured above) helicopters. Under these contracts, Sikorsky will strip and rebuild UH-60A/L helicopter main rotor blades and overhaul UH-60A/L helicopter main rotor hubs. Learn more.

The Superalloys Conference Proceedings Archive provides nearly 1000 technical papers from 15 superalloys conferences at no charge, including the International Symposium on Superalloys, and the International Symposium on Superalloys 718, 625, 706 and Various Derivatives. Learn more.

Nickel in combination with molybdenum, cobalt, and tungsten ensure the required creep-rupture strength and fatigue strength of alloys designed for gas turbine engines at ThyssenKrupp VDM. A chromium content of approximately 20% ensures resistance to high-temperature corrosion. Aluminum and titanium also increase the creep-rupture strength by precipitating intermetallic NiX(Al,Ti)y phases at the operating temperature. Learn more.

A microchanneled nickel-base superalloy reduces engine noise by absorbing sound waves through viscous shear, says the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Jason Nadler has developed what could be the world’s first micro honeycomb made of a nickel-base superalloy. Learn more.

Friction stir welding techniques can now join titanium, steel, and nickel-base alloys in thickness ranging up to one inch in a single pass, reports the Edison Welding Institute. EWI has demonstrated the capability to produce full-penetration joints in both corner and T-joint geometries. E-mail. Learn more.

A lightweight durable composite fan cowl for V2500-A5 engine nacelles has been built by Goodrich Corp. It is made by a resin transfer infusion process developed by Bombardier, in which the fan cowl's traditional honeycomb interior is replaced with a monolithic structure. Learn more.

Aluminum Welding, Second Edition

Welding of aluminum is more complicated than that of steel because of the inherent thermophysical properties of the material. In this Second Edition, additional features have been added and some existing chapters merged to make the book more useful and comprehensive. Details of gas metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding are dealt with in separate chapters. Heat flow analysis is described using a finite difference scheme and simplified heat source model. Significant coverage has been added on friction stir welding.

How Does a Helicopter Fly?

Not very easily, but it’s all explained on the Sikorsky helicopter website. The rotor blades have an airfoil shape, like the wing of an airplane: curved on top and flat on the bottom. When they rotate, the pressure of the slower-moving air flowing under the blade is greater than the faster-moving air above it. This difference in pressure pushes the blades up, giving the helicopter the lift it needs to fly. For details about how a helicopter hovers and changes direction, not to mention lands,
