Solar Energy at Sandia
Chuck Andraka, Sandia National Laboratories engineer, stands in front of the Stirling array at the lab. The Stirling Energy System generates electricity by focusing the sun’s rays onto a receiver, which transmits the heat energy to a Stirling engine. The engine is a sealed system filled with hydrogen. As the gas heats and cools, its pressure rises and falls. The change in pressure drives the pistons inside the engine, producing mechanical power, which in turn drives a generator and makes electricity. Learn more.

Save Energy Now is a national initiative of the Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) to drive a 25% reduction in industrial energy intensity in ten years. Industrial companies can participate in no-cost energy assessments and utilize ITP resources to reduce energy use while increasing profits. Plants can apply for a no-cost energy assessment by a DOE energy expert. The DOE also offers system-specific software tools to analyze your plant. Learn more.

The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Information Center answers questions on all EERE's products and services. Industrial callers are eligible for an advanced level of service that includes engineering assistance, research, and software support for plant staff and industrial service providers working on industrial energy savings projects. Learn more.

Sandia National Laboratories has been chosen as project manager of a new Department of Energy program called Solar Energy Grid Integration Systems (SEGIS). It will provide R&D funding to develop less expensive, higher-performing products to enhance solar photovoltaic systems. Industry teams include Apollo Solar, EMTEC, Enphase, General Electric, Nextek Power Systems, Petra Solar, Princeton Power, Premium Power, PV Powered, Smart Spark, Florida Solar Energy Center of the University of Central Florida, and VPT Energy Inc. Meeting the Challenges to the Materials Industries Posed by Materials Supply, Energy, Environmental Constraints, Global Competition, and New Technologies (Feb. 23-27, 2009)

A Perfect Storm is Converging on the Materials Industries — THIS NEW COURSE WILL HELP YOU COPE.

This is a different breed of course for ASM, and one that addresses potentially devastating challenges. Although the course is geared for the metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites industries, it actually applies to all manufacturing. The course covers controversial and difficult topics, and it presents some issues most of us would rather ignore (if only we could!). There will be ample opportunities for discussion.

UAV Launches from Submarine

The Cormorant unmanned air vehicle can rise out of the depths from a nuclear-powered submarine, spread its wings, and fly above the sea. Made of titanium and other advanced materials, the Cormorant weighs about four tons. To compensate for underwater pressures that are three times greater than the maximum pressure that a typical aircraft can withstand, the inside of the Cormorant will be pressurized with inert gas or air. Smart, stealthy, and fast, the Cormorant's gull-like wings can fold and unfold around the body of the aircraft.

Bomb-Sniffing Bees?

Members of the Los Alamos National Laboratory's Stealthy Insect Sensor project have used sweet treats to condition honeybees to respond to the chemical scent of explosives. The bees extend their proboscis (tongue) when exposed to explosives. Team members have trained the bees to do this by rewarding them with a dose of sugar each time they react to the smell of explosive chemicals such as TNT and C-4. Proboscis extension is a reflex normally triggered by the presence of nectar.

Past Presidents of ASM

JFK once told a group of Nobel Laureates, “"There hasn't been such an extraordinary collection of talent and knowledge gathered in this room since Thomas Jefferson dined here alone." ASM staffers felt the same way recently when we took this photograph of 14 Past Presidents and two Managing Directors of ASM International.

Our Past Presidents maintain an informal, continuing and personal linkage with our society, providing a unique and invaluable resource for giving advice and guidance to the ASM President, Board of Trustees, and Managing Director.
