Sensor Detects Explosives
|
A tiny sensor that monitors electrical conductivity allows scientists to detect the presence of explosives by detecting hydrogen peroxide, a common ingredient in explosives. The sensor measures the conductivity of two different thin films, one made of a cobalt compound and another made of a copper compound. When reacting to most fumes, the two films respond in similar ways, but when exposed to hydrogen peroxide, the films show a difference in electrical conductivity. When the sensor indicates this difference, that means that trace amounts of hydrogen peroxide are present.

This Building Rotates!

You could get seasick in this building, which so far is only on paper. However, plans are underway to build the first rotating skyscraper – in Dubai, no surprise there. It will have 80 floors, and the view will constantly change because each floor rotates, and at different speeds. The web site claims that you can even park your car in your apartment there. But how will the elevators work in a spinning building? You can watch an animation of the rotating buildings here.
