Solar Atmospheres to Build New Plant
Solar Atmospheres Inc., Souderton Pa., plans to open a heat treating and brazing plant site in the Los Angeles area. Vacuum furnace orders will be placed with a goal of operating in 2009. Financing for the $10 million project will come from current East Coast banking and new West Coast banking sources. Target market areas include aerospace, titanium, and superalloys.

AMG Purchases Part of Graphite Manufacturer
AMG Advanced Metallurgical Group N.V., Netherlands, announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, AMG Invest GmbH, has purchased about 11% of the outstanding shares of Graphit Kropfmuehl Aktiengesellschaft, Hauzenberg, Germany, a manufacturer of various grades and forms of graphite. AMG is a global leader in the production of highly engineered specialty metal products and advanced vacuum furnace systems.

Wisconsin Oven Ships Units for
Hydrogen-Embrittlement Relief
Wisconsin Oven, East Troy, Wis., designed and manufactured two electrically heated conveyor ovens to be used for running a hydrogen-embrittlement relief treatment on locking wheel lugs. Heating chamber dimensions of each oven are 4 ft wide by 31 ft long by 9 in. high. The ovens have a 500°F maximum operating temperature and a maximum production rate of 1,600 lb/h.

Hydrogenics Awarded Orders for
Onsite Hydrogen-Generation Units
Hydrogenics Corp., Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, received orders from customers in China, Eastern Europe, and the United Arab Emirates for hydrogen-generator systems valued at $11.6 million. The company’s HySTAT hydrogen generation systems will be used to deliver high purity hydrogen onsite for metallurgical processing, microelectronics manufacturing, and preparation of nuclear fuel for shipment to power-generation reactors.

WPI’s Apelian Elected as TMS President
Dr. Diran Apelian, Howmet Professor of Engineering and Director of the Metal Processing Institute at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, Mass. became the 52nd president of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS), Warrendale, Pa. Professor Apelian, who succeeds Robert D. Shull of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, is an honorary member of the French Materials Engineering Society, a member of the ASM Heat Treating Society, and a Fellow of ASM International, APMI, and TMS.

Premier Furnace Specialists
Installs Tip-Up Furnace
To expand heat treating capacity at its Trojan Heat Treat plant in Homer, Mich., Heat Treating Services Corp. of America, Pontiac, Mich., had Premier Furnace Specialists Inc., Farmington Hills, Mich., dismantle and remove a tip-up furnace from another facility and install it at Trojan Heat Treat. The furnace, which has a load capacity of 92,000 lb (42,000 kg), is currently running continuous stress relief and annealing cycles. Premier Furnace also supplied and installed a rebuilt 10,000 cfh exothermic gas generator and a new water recirculation system.
