ASM Heat Treating Society Corner
DOE ITP Training Sessions
DOE’s one-day End User Workshop “Improving Thermal Efficiency in Process Heating Equipment” introduces standard process heating equipment and provides practical tips on:
•Process heating equipment maintenance
•How to improve furnace energy efficiency and reduce emissions
•How to use DOE’s Process Heating Assessment and Survey Tool (PHAST) software to survey furnaces and heaters, identify major energy-using equipment, prioritizes improvement opportunities, and assess available methods to improve thermal efficiency in industrial plants)
In addition to Improving Thermal Efficiency in Process Heating Equipment, DOE offers training sessions designed for Compressed Air, Steam, Pumping, Fans, and Motor Systems.

Solar Atmospheres Heat Treats
5.5 Ton Weldment

Vacuum heat treated 4140 weldment
Solar Atmospheres, Souderton, Pa. heat treated two 4140 steel weldments, each weighing 11,000 lb. The pieces were normalized and tempered to achieve specific yield strength, while minimizing distortion, through controlled heating and cooling. The part is a component in a large tensile testing machine that tests braided steel cable for shipbuilding applications.

NAM Says Economy Stuck In Low Gear
National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) chief economist David Huether said the economy failed to create jobs in January 2008 for the first time since August 2003. Jobs on the factory floor dropped by 106,000 over the past year; with 93 percent of those jobs in either the motor vehicles sector or in industries closely connected with housing. The sharp decline in residential investment as well as slowing consumer demand for autos is having a significant negative impact on the manufacturing sector.

OBITUARY
Past ASM International president (1974-75) Dean K. Hanink passed away on January 19, 2008. Dean received his B.Sc. in metallurgical engineering from the University of Michigan in 1942 and started working at the Dodge Chicago plant for Walter Jominy. He joined GM Research in Detroit in 1945, where he received his first patent in 1948 for the Al-Dip process for aluminum coating of steel. Another 26 patents followed for automotive and aerospace applications. Dean was named a Fellow of American Society for Metals in 1971. He retired in 1981 from Gas Turbine Engines of the Detroit Diesel Allison Division of General Motors, Indianapolis, where he was manager, Engineering Operations.
