Institute Awarded Grant to Help Build Skilled Workforce
Lumina
Foundation, an Indianapolis-based, private, independent foundation
that helps persons achieve their potential by expanding access and
success in education beyond high school, awarded a $538,000 grant
to the Manufacturing Institute/Center for Workforce Success (the
research and education arm of the National Association of Manufacturers,
Washington, D.C.) and its partners for Business Champions, an initiative
to catalyze business leadership to support policies that expand
educational opportunities aimed at building a competitive U.S. workforce.
Business Champions will expand, mobilize, and amplify the "business
voice" in support of higher education that is more closely
aligned with the needs of the workforce. More

Japan's
Chugai Ro to Supply Annealing Equipment to China
Chugai
Ro Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan, received an order from Shanghai Stal
Precision Stainless Steel Co. for annealing equipment to heat treat
ultrathin stainless steel sheet. The order is believed to be worth
2-3 billion yen (US$17.23-25.86 million). Shanghai Stal Precision
is a joint venture of Allegheny Ludlum Corp. (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and
the Chinese company Baoshan Iron & Steel Co. More

Air
Liquide Acquires 100% of Japan Air Gases
Air
Liquide, Paris, France, owner of 55% of Japan Air Gases (JAG), purchased
the remaining 45% currently held by The Linde Group. The completion
of the transaction is subject to approval by the European competition
authorities. JAG total revenues are estimated in 2006 to be around
Euro930M and are currently fully consolidated in the Group's accounts.
This acquisition will have a positive impact on the Group's results
for 2007. Air Liquide has been present in Japan since 1907. More

Cambridge
International Names Director of Worldwide Market Development
Cambridge International Inc., Cambridge, Md., a leading international
manufacturer of metal conveyor belting and wire cloth products,
appointed H. J. Scofield as Director of Worldwide Market Development.
Scofield will lead all new business and market development programs
on a worldwide basis for the Cambridge family of companies, with
special focus on Western Europe, the former Eastern Bloc countries,
and Asia.

to Sell Atmosphere Annealing Inc.
Maxco Inc., Grande Ledge, Mich., signed a definitive asset purchase
and sale agreement to sell substantially all the assets of its wholly
owned subsidiary Atmosphere Annealing Inc. (AAI), as well as the
assets of AAI's 100% owned subsidiary BCGW Inc. (BCGW) to Quanex
Technologies Inc., a subsidiary of Quanex Corp., Houston, Tex. The
transaction, expected to close in February 2007. Terms were not

Alcan
to Upgrade Automotive-Sheet Plant in France
Alcan Inc., Montreal, Quebec, Canada, will invest US$9.5 million
in its specialty sheet facility at Neuf-Brisach, France, to upgrade
its existing automotive continuous annealing and quenching line.
The project is scheduled to come on stream in the first half of
2008. The investment will significantly improve the aluminum strip
surface and mechanical properties to better satisfy current customer
requirements and anticipate future developments in the aluminum
car-body market. More

Nominations Sought for George H. Bodeen Heat Treating Achievement
Award
ASM's
Heat Treating Society (HTS) is currently seeking nominations for
the George H. Bodeen Heat Treating Achievement Award, which recognizes
distinguished and significant contributions to the field of heat
treating through leadership, management, or engineering development
of substantial commercial impact.
Rules for submitting nominations:
- Candidates
may be submitted by any HTS member.
- Nominations
should clearly state the contributions the nominee has made to
the field of heat treating and their commercial impact. Three
support letters should be included with the nomination.
- Nominations
are eligible for three rounds of review. Awardees shall not be
selected posthumously.
- Deadline
for nominations is February 1, 2007.
- No
more than one award every other year will be presented.
