Brinell, Rockwell Hardness Test Methods Revised by ASTM International
ASTM International, W. Conshohocken, Pa., revised standards E 10: Test Method for Brinell Hardness
of Metallic Materials, and E 18: Test Methods for Rockwell Hardness of Metallic Materials. The intention of these revisions is to improve the standards by specifying requirements for traceability, clarifying requirements and procedures, revising procedures to reflect current practice, and adding requirements and procedures to make them better test methods.

CEC Supplies Heat Treating Furnace to Aircraft Manufacturer
Consolidated Engineering Company (CEC), Kennesaw,
Ga., will supply a drop-bottom furnace to Quartz Mountain Aerospace (Altus, Okla.), which plans to incorporate heat-treating to its in-house manufacturing operations. The furnace will be designed and built to meet the updated Aerospace Material Specification AMS 2750D—the specification currently being used by the National Aerospace Defense Contractors Accreditation Program (NADCAP).

SSi Upgrades Controls at Ford Transmission Plant
Super Systems Inc. (SSi), Cincinnati, Ohio, will supply state-of-the-art controls and software used in the heat treating department at Ford Motor Co.’s Sharonville, Ohio transmission plant as part of the company’s $200-million investment at the facility. The Sharonville plant is considered a center of excellence within Ford for its production of gears and transmission components. The controllers, together with a supervisory control and data-acquisition system, provide complete traceability of
furnace loads.

Precise Strip Cooling for Hot Rolling Mills
Siemens Metals Technologies, Erlangen, Germany, developed a strip cooling method for hot rolling mills called Microstructure Target Cooling, which enables precise calculation and control of phase transformation in the steel and, thus, reliable and efficient production of modern materials such as multiphase steels or special deep drawing steel grades. Deviations from the specified cooling curve are compensated within just 200 milliseconds.

Honeywell Enters Flow Meter Market
Honeywell Process Solutions, Fort Washington, Pa., launched a new line of high-performance flow meters (VersaFlow line), which include electromagnetic, Coriolis, ultrasonic, and vortex types. The flow meters will be manufactured by Krohne, Duisburg, Germany, to Honeywell’s standards for quality, performance, and reliability. They will be distributed and supported on a global basis through Honeywell’s existing sales and distribution organization. For more information click here.

McDonald Steel Starts Up New Reheat Furnace

McDonald Steel Corp., McDonald, Ohio, commenced operation of its new $7.5-million walking-hearth reheat furnace. The furnace replaces two 80-year old sloped-hearth pusher furnaces, which were used to heat billets to rolling temperatures to 2300F. The new furnace, at the entry end of the plant’s 14-in. rolling mill, is an integral part of hot roll production of asymmetrical special steel bars and shapes.
