Papers Sought for ASM HTS/Bodycote ‘Best Paper in Heat Treating’ Contest

The ASM Heat Treating Society established the Best Paper in Heat Treating Award in 1997 to recognize a paper that represents advancement in heat-treating technology, promotes heat treating in a substantial way, or represents a clear advancement in managing the business of heat treating. The award is sponsored by Bodycote Thermal Process-North America.

The winner of the HTS Best Paper Contest receives a plaque of recognition and is automatically qualified to compete in the Bodycote Best Paper Competition scheduled for spring 2008.

The Bodycote portion of the award includes a monetary prize of $3,000 for the best undergraduate scientific/technical paper, $3,000 for the best postgraduate scientific/technical paper, and $3,000 for the best orally presented paper (this can also be the best scientific/technical paper), as well as $1,250 to all other finalists.

Can-Eng Furnaces Under New Ownership

Can-Eng Furnaces, Niagara Falls, N.Y., has been sold by Wally Bamford (former chairman of the company) to G. John Krediet and Alan Van Geyn (the current president of the company). The management team of the company will remain unchanged. Can-Eng Furnaces will operate under the new name of Can-Eng Furnaces International Ltd.

Eclipse Celebrates 100 Years in Business

Eclipse Inc., Rockford, Ill., founded in 1908 by Garnet McKee, will attain its 100th year of doing business in 2008. In 1960, A.C. Perks, the nephew of Mr. McKee, became president of the company. His son, Douglas Perks, was named president in 1990 and is currently chief executive officer. A second son, Lachlan Perks, was made president in 2006. Wendy Perks-Fisher, daughter of A.C. Perks, president of the Eclipse Foundation and former CEO of the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, chairs the centennial project.

Houghton to Merge with
Affiliate of AEA Investors LLC

Houghton International Inc., Valley Forge, Pa., a global manufacturer and supplier of industrial fluids and chemical management services, entered into an agreement to merge with a newly formed affiliate of AEA Investors LLC (AEA). Houghton does not anticipate any immediate changes in its facilities, employment, or range of product and service offerings. After the merger, the business will continue to be conducted under the Houghton International name. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

NAM Gives Energy Efficiency Legislation High Marks

The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), Washington, D.C., praised House Science and Technology Committee Chairman Bart Gordon and Energy and Environment Subcommittee Chairman Nick Lampson for their leadership in winning house passage of economically sound, cost-effective energy efficiency legislation. The bill authorizes and supports research, development, demonstration and commercial application of new industrial processes and technologies to optimize energy efficiency, and it expands Industrial Assessment Centers programs at universities to promote student training and adoption of energy efficient technologies and practices.

Innovative Materials Allow Lighter Coil Springs

ThyssenKrupp Bilstein Suspension, Ennepetal, Germany, a leader in the development of innovative components, introduced its high-performance Therm-o-Tec Process (HPTP), used to make coil springs. HPTP involves induction austenitizing heat treatment followed by thermomechanical forming in a rolling process, which provides outstanding ductility and a previously unattainable strength level of 2,200 MPa (319 ksi).

Rolled Alloys Opens New Processing Facility

Rolled Alloys, Temperance, Mich., opened a stainless bar sales and processing facility in Streamwood, Ill. The 33,000-sq ft facility provides the company the opportunity to serve local customers in the Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, and Minnesota stainless bar market.
