Successful ASM Heat Treating Society Conference & Expo in Detroit
From a sold-out exhibit floor to a well-attended technical program, the 2007 ASM Heat Treating Society Conference & Exposition in Detroit more than lived up to expectations. “We had 191 exhibitors representing the best in heat treating technology, right here in Detroit,” said outgoing HTS president Bill Bernard, President and CEO of Surface Combustion Inc. “We had a tremendous Heat Treating Exposition, and that’s a testament to our exhibitors and our organizers. This year’s [technical] program, featuring the George Totten International Symposium on Quenching and Cooling, set a higher standard for future HTS events,” Bernard said.
At the ASM Heat Treating Society General Membership Meeting in Detroit, Bernard talked about some of the challenges and opportunities facing HTS including cooperation with other societies and organization to serve the needs of the heat treating community, starting plans for an even better Heat Treat Show in 2009, continuing to develop regional heat treating events, expanding lifelong learning and education opportunities, and continuing the development of the new HTS Community Website.

Materials Camp Success Story in Chicago
When asked by headquarters to consider hosting a materials Camp several years ago, the Chicago Chapter not only agreed to do it, but also developed a new low cost model for Materials Camp that could be used by others, The Chicago Plan is based on having businesses, colleges and universities participate as host sites where teams of students and mentors could explore materials science through forensic examinations of failed components. After five successful Camps, the Chapter still doesn’t have a shortage of host businesses and mentor volunteers, as younger members are starting to take on the role of mentor.
