Papers Sought for ASM HTS/Bodycote ‘Best Paper in Heat Treating’ Contest

The ASM Heat Treating Society established the Best Paper in Heat Treating Award in 1997 to recognize a paper that represents advancement in heat-treating technology, promotes heat treating in a substantial way, or represents a clear advancement in managing the business of heat treating. The award is sponsored by Bodycote Thermal Process-North America.

The winner of the HTS Best Paper Contest receives a plaque of recognition and is automatically qualified to compete in the Bodycote Best Paper Competition scheduled for spring 2008.

The Bodycote portion of the award includes a monetary prize of $3,000 for the best undergraduate scientific/technical paper, $3,000 for the best postgraduate scientific/technical paper, and $3,000 for the best orally presented paper (this can also be the best scientific/technical paper), as well as $1,250 to all other finalists.

NAM Against House, Senate Energy Proposals

The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), Washington, D.C., spoke out against proposed Congressional energy legislation, highlighting the projected loss of nearly 5-million jobs and 4% GDP reduction by 2030 expected to result from the bills’ implementation. The proposed legislation also is expected to diminish the American household’s annual purchasing power by approximately $1,700 and reduce aggregate investment by 3.4%.

Alcoa Receives NADCAP Certification

Alcoa, New York, N.Y., received the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program’s (NADCAP) approval for ultrasonic inspection and heat-treated forged products at its Samara manufacturing facility in Russia. The Samara plant became the second Russian production facility to acquire the right to enter the world aerospace market and work with such customers as Airbus and Boeing. Alcoa’s Belaya Kalitva heat-treated sheet and plate received NADCAP approval this past summer.

Advanced Heat Treat Opens Facility in Alabama


AHT’s new state-of-the-art facility includes one of the world’s largest ion-nitriding vessels, with the capability of heat treating parts up to 60,000 lb.

Advanced Heat Treat Corp., Waterloo, Iowa, expanded its resources by opening a fourth full-service UltraGlow ion-nitriding facility in Cullman, Ala. The new facility includes one of the world’s largest vacuum ion nitriding vessels, with a 60,000 pound capacity, which has the flexibility to service large tooling/stamping dies, high volume production components, and prototype and developmental processing.

ALD-Holcroft Names New President,
Vice President Sales

ALD-Holcroft Vacuum Technologies Co., Inc., Wixom, Mich., named Jason Sisler president. He will be responsible for building the company’s engineering, manufacturing, and sales operations in North America. William Gornicki has moved from sales manager at the company to vice president of sales and marketing.

Japan's Chugai Ro to Supply
Annealing Furnace to China

Chugai Ro Co., Osaka, Japan, received an order from Shanghai Baosteel Group Corp. for what is said to be the largest annealing furnace in China for steel plate, capable of processing 57,600 tons a year. Chugai Ro will make the furnace components in Japan and ship them to China for local assembly. The annealing furnace is to become operational in the autumn of 2009.

Amtek India and Italian Company
Teksid Sign Technical Collaboration

Amtek India, New Delhi, inked a technical collaboration agreement with Teksid based in Turin, Italy. Teksid is a world leader in the production of iron castings for the automotive industry with operations spread out in Europe, North and South America and Asia. The technical collaboration agreement will provide Amtek access to cutting edge technology for the manufacture of 1.3 litre small diesel engine blocks in India. The company is the original equipment supplier to Maruti Udyog, JCB, New Holland Tractors, John Deere Tractors, Hundai Motors, ITL, Eicher Motor and also refrigeration industries like LG Electronics.

Brazilian Steel Company Buys Quanex

Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau S.A., Sao Paulo, bought U.S.-based steel company Quanex Corp. for $1.67 billion, boosting its presence in the global automotive industry. Quanex, through its MacSteel Division, is the second-largest U.S. producer of special-bar-quality steel. The Gerdau Group is the world´s 14th largest steelmaker and the largest producer of long steel in the Americas.
