Corrosion occurs in all industries from automotive and aerospace to infrastructure, construction, petroleum, power, paper making, food processing, bioengineering, and pharmaceuticals. Corrosion is costly, dangerous, wasteful, and unsightly. It can be predicted, controlled, and even avoided. This class presents an overview of the eight major corrosion processes and related corrosion monitoring, prediction and control mechanisms. The principles discussed are applicable to all metals.
Emphasis is on practical applications of corrosion technology to industrial corrosion problems.
Corrosion: Understanding the Basics is included in this course.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
- Engineers, particularly civil and mechanical engineers
- Designers, Specifiers, QA Managers
- Marine engineers
- Chemical and petroleum industry specialists
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Identify the eight major forms of corrosion and which are of concern for your applications
- Relate the occurrence and severity of corrosion to the natural driving forces
- Describe common corrosion test methods for your applications
- Avoid many of the design traps that speed corrosive decay
- Recognize applicable corrosion control techniques and their limitations

Mr. Thomas K. (Tom) Glasgow, FASM, recently retired Consulting Technologist for the Materials Division of the John H. Glenn Research Center, joined the staff of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1968. His research interests include powder metallurgy, ceramics, solidification science, advanced technology for medicine, space power, and technology transfer. Mr. Glasgow is the author of more than forty technical papers on high temperature materials science, a few patents, and has served as an editor of one book. He is also a Fellow of ASM International. He is a recipient of an I-R 100 award for the development of oxide dispersion strengthened superalloys and is an inventor of the new material of choice for hydrogen cooled rocket engine thrust chambers as well as a new technology for characterizing three-dimensional fluid flows. Mr. Glasgow earned his BS and MS degrees from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the initiator of an ASM program rewarding teachers for introducing engineering concepts into elementary schools.
