Practical Interpretation of Microstructures has been developed to provide students with a broad survey of microstructures typically encountered in industry.  An extensive collection of more than 200 metallographic mounts have been collected and archived as real world examples of microstructures representing typical treatments and conditions encountered in popular alloy groups.

This blended version of Practical Interpretation of Microstructures provides online reference content, learning activities and instructor supported forums.  Students learn at their own pace to prepare for a face to face class where the instructor provides guidance in interpretation of real life microstructures of important engineering alloy groups.

There are no required prerequisites, but the basic knowledge of sample preparation, heat treating or metallurgy will enhance the understanding of the material.

Students are encouraged to bring prepared metallographic specimens to the class for discussion.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

  • Metallographers
  • Technicians
  • Engineers
  • Individuals who are required to interpret microstructures

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Utilize proper microstructure terminology
  • Correlate structures to manufacturing processes and heat treatment
  • Recognize martensite, pearlite, ferrite, bainite and other structures

Continuing Education Units: 3.0
