Criteria for Awarding Educational CEU

Selected ASM Education courses earn between 1.0 - 3.0 Continuing Education Units (CEU).

  • All education activities that award continuing education units (CEUs) are required to include at least one of the following to ensure that the student has satisfactorily completed the course:

  • Lesson tests

  • Final exam

  • Laboratory workbook

  • A final grade of 80% or better is required to "pass" the activity and receive the CEU.

  • An established needs assessment process must be in place which is the basis for educational activity planning and development. Potential learners and/or multiple sources of information are tapped for needs assessment.  Needs assessments are systematically documented, reviewed, and updated.

  • Educational activity topics and content must originate from identified and documented needs.

  • Learning outcomes must be stated to the potential learners in advance of the activity. (i.e. stated in the advertisement material).

  • Instructors need to disclose and proprietary interest in any product, instrument, device, service, or material discussed during the educational activity and the source of any compensation related to the presentation. This information needs to be provided to the audience in advance of the presentation.

  • All classes must have an evaluation mechanism to assess and provide feedback on the instructor and their ability to achieve the learning outcomes.

  • Evaluation data must be used as a method of continuous quality improvement for future educational activities.

The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized method of quantifying the time spent in the classroom during professional development and training activities. Ten hours of instruction = 1.0 CEU. One hour of instruction = 0.1 CEU.

The Professional Development Hour (PDH) is a term established by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) in their "Continuing Professional Competency Guidelines." In these guidelines, NCEES defines the relationship between CEUs and PDHs as: 0.1 CEU (1 hour of instruction) = 1 PDH; 1.0 CEU (10 hours of instruction) = 10 PDHs.

The primary purpose of the CEU is to provide a permanent record of the educational accomplishments of an individual who has completed significant non-credit educational and career enhancement experiences.

The primary purpose of the PDH is to establish that an individual attended a continuing education activity but this activity does not necessarily need to have an examination associated with it to award the credits.
