Finding a common language in their desire to improve patient care, clinicians and engineers came together in Cleveland to discuss new and innovative medical devices and implants.

The Materials, Medicine and Nanotechnology Summit, hosted by the Cleveland Clinic, ASM International and Nano-Network, brings together materials and medicine.

“This conference is a wonderful opportunity for clinicians and engineers to speak each other’s language,” said Edward C. Benzel, M.D., chairman of the Cleveland Clinic Spine Institute. “The clinician traditionally does not speak ‘engineering,’ and the engineer does not traditionally speak ‘clinician.’ This kind of dialogue establishment is a key for developing new advances in medical devices.”

"It’s important for clinicians to work with materials scientists and engineers on a regular basis," added Ali Rezai, M.D., Chairman of the Center for Neurological Restoration and Director of the Brain Neuromodulation Center at Cleveland Clinic. "We must understand the potential of each other's work, so that we can work together on advances that will result in improved care for patients."

The summit focuses on materials advances for orthopedics and spinal disorders, cardiovascular devices and implants, neurological implants, engineered biomaterials, minimally invasive surgery, and the potential of nanotechnology to provide new solutions.

“I’m excited to be part of this historic summit,” said plenary speaker Dana Medlin, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. “We understand the materials; the clinicians know what they need. By working closer together, we can develop good safe reliable medical devices.”

The Cleveland Clinic and ASM will offer blended technical programming covering the spectrum of materials-related challenges and opportunities in medicine, from today's materials to the next generation of nanomaterials.

ASM will offer materials and process-related seminars for engineers and physicians who work with medical devices, with CME accreditation. Exhibits will feature advances in materials and processes for medical devices from both manufacturers and suppliers.
