CLEVELAND (September 21) --- Shaping the future of medical devices and implants, an historic gathering of clinicians and engineers will participate in the Materials, Medicine, and Nanotechnology Summit hosted by Cleveland Clinic, ASM International and Nano-Network, October 2-5 in Cleveland. Highlights include:
MEMS Commercialization Panel -- Held during the Wednesday evening banquet, this panel will describe the multidisciplinary collaboration and business experience required to translate new and novel MEMS concepts from the engineering laboratory into successful medical products for clinical use by doctors and patients. The unique obstacles and pathways characteristic to commercialization of MEMS for implantable medical devices will be discussed by representative company executives and entrepreneurs. The panel will be moderated by Shuvo Roy, Ph.D., Co-Director of the BioMEMS Laboratory at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, Department of Biomedical Engineering.
Seminars on Materials for Medical Devices -- Over the past two years, ASM has provided material and process-based seminars to more than 1,000 medical device professionals. Now for the first time in Cleveland, ASM will hold four popular MPMD seminars concurrently on Monday, October 2. Morning seminars will answer the needs of engineers and materials professionals, while afternoon seminars are designed for clinicians and medical practitioners. (Separate registration is required.) Topics include:
Plenary Sessions -- On Tuesday and Wednesday, October 3-4, plenary speakers will cover the spectrum of materials-related challenges in medicine:
Attendees are encouraged to register by 4 p.m. September 28 to pay a fee as low as $195. After 4 p.m. on the 28th, registration fees will increase to $895 for all attendees.

Headquartered in Northeast Ohio, ASM International is the world's leading society serving the materials science and engineering community, with more than 38,000 members worldwide. ASM provides authoritative information and knowledge on materials and processes -- from the structural to the nanoscale. Information on materials is obtained from wherever in the world it is available and distributed wherever in the world it is needed through ASM conferences and expositions, publications and handbooks, seminars and training, and www.asminternational.org.
The Nano-Network was formed by scientists, entrepreneurs and financiers to improve and expand nanotechnology research and commercialization activities and capacities in Northeast Ohio, and throughout the nation. The Nano-Network is one of the largest and best-known privately funded, "grass roots" nanotechnology organizations in the U.S. The Nano-Network is currently managed by NorTech (www.nortech.org), a regional economic development organization focused on innovation, technology and entrepreneurship in Northeast Ohio. NorTech's relationship with the Nano-Network provides the group with structure, contacts and resources to further promote nanotechnology in Ohio and the United States. www.nano-network.org
