The Obama Administration has announced that it is stepping up its investment in the U.S. Materials Genome Initiative (MGI), reinforcing its commitment to the program on the occasion of its third anniversary. Since the MGI's launch in 2011, the Federal Government has invested over $250 million in various projects to help build an innovation infrastructure to serve emerging industrial sectors that depend on advanced materials.
An additional $150 million, under the direction of five Federal agencies, will fund further research efforts in support of MGI and the overall goal of revitalizing American manufacturing. Also disclosed in the announcement were plans to establish a state-of-the-art materials data facility, a technical leadership program, and a new center for advanced materials at a leading university.
