The right piping system is essential when handling acids, caustics, or corrosive fluids. Engineered plastic-lined piping systems provide the chemical resistance of plastics, with the inherent strength of steel. PTFE and PFA fluoropolymers are chemically inert having near universal corrosion resistance. PTFE has the best coefficient of friction of any solid. This gives it great non stick properties, which keeps pressure drops to a minimum. Picking the appropriate solution for corrosive fluid handling requires careful analysis of service as well as cost and performance factors. This presentation will address the various types of plastic-lined steel pipe, information on how lined pipe compares with exotic alloys, and how to choose the best product for your application. Understanding how the different thermoplastics perform will allow engineers to specify the best lining for their service application, while maximizing value within a set budget. Although our main topic discussion will be on polytetrafluroehtylene (PTFE), we will also explore polypropylene (PP), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as they are also commonly used in Western Canada.
