We have many things going on this month during Engineers Week, now rebranded as EWEEK (www.DiscoverE.org): the Richmond Joint Engineers Council (RJEC) Celebrating Engineering Ingenuity Day and ASM CO2 Dragster Contest, the RJEC Engineers Week Banquet, the Peninsula Engineers Council (PEC) Engineering Career Day, and the PEC Engineer of the Year Banquet.
February 19, 2017 | Science Museum of Virginia
In support of Engineers Week activities, the Eastern Virginia Chapter of ASM International is sponsoring a CO2 Dragster Contest. The objective of this contest is to teach the participants about materials selection and utilization through the practical task of creating small, CO2 jet powered dragsters.
January 18, 2017 | Rolls-Royce Crosspointe
TOUR IS FULL - Response for this tour has been very strong, so unfortunately we can take no more reservations. The Rotatives Supply Chain unit of Rolls-Royce manufactures high precision titanium and nickel alloy gas turbine engine components at the Crosspointe facility in Prince George County. Built in 2010, it was the first dedicated, green field Rolls-Royce manufacturing site in the US.

Fun in Metals is a participatory lecture with demonstrations and exhibits of many facets of metallurgy. Professor Robert B. Pond, Sr. devised this talk for the young at heart from Johns Hopkins University and gave this lecture more than 600 times all over the world. His son, Dr. Robert B. Pond, Jr. follows in his father's footsteps in presenting the lecture.
October 27, 2016 | Virginia Commonwealth University
The Nanomaterials Characterization Center (NCC) is a research core facility of the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Office of Research and is located in the Institute for Engineering and Medicine. As a core research facility, resources and services are available by contract to internal university and external commercial users. The NCC offers technologies that benefit multi-disciplinary industrial and scholarly research in a broad range of sciences to modify, manipulate, or tailor the surface, size, or shape of a particular material.

CANCELED AT SPEAKER'S REQUEST DUE TO SCHEDULING DIFFICULTIES - We are sorry for any inconvenience. Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are a high temperature, electrically insulating version of carbon nanotubes. However, they survive at temperatures above 900C so they can be used to reinforce metal matrix composites where carbon nanotubes would decompose. This technical presentation will cover the initial synthesis discoveries, the science behind the BNNT, and the effort to secure funding to open a factory.
May 20, 2016 | Anderson's Blacksmith Shop
The work at the Armoury Complex in Colonial Williamsburg involves the research, rediscovery, practice, and preservation of the pre-industrial processes for working iron and steel. Come and see a tour of the facility and demonstrations of iron working and traditional forge welding by Master Blacksmith Ken Schwarz.
April 28, 2016 | Virginia Commonwealth University
This presentation will provide an overview of industry considerations associated with design for manufacture using additive manufacturing including select fabrication methods, material testing considerations, processes, geometry, and part development.
March 26, 2016 | GE/Alstom Willis Road Workshop
GE/Alstom's presence in Richmond dates back to the 1970s. The Willis Road shop, which employs around 150 people, provides upgrade and repair services for power plant generators, steam turbines and gas turbines manufactured by Alstom as well as other suppliers.
