About the Presentation:

Mr. Kevin Jordan, PE will describe how NASA's need for better multifunctional materials drove the discoveries at the Jefferson Lab (JLab) Free-Electron Laser Facility that eventually led to a successful start-up company. Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNT) are a high temperature, electrically insulating version of carbon nanotubes. However, BNNT's survive at temperatures above 900C so they can be used to reinforce metal matrix composites where carbon nanotubes would decompose. The technical presentation will cover the initial synthesis discoveries, the science behind the BNNT, and the effort to secure funding to open a factory.

About the Speaker:

Mr. Kevin Jordan, PE began his career with an Associate's degree in Electronics Technology, after working 1 year in the telecommunication industry he took a position at Fermi Lab in 1978. In 1985 he moved to Hamburg, Germany to work in the newly formed Superconducting RF group at DESY. He attended night school at Illinois Institute of Technology while at Fermi. In 1990 while at ODU he finished his BSEE, and passed the PE exam shortly after. Mr. Jordan was recruited to JLab in 1987, where he is now the diagnostics group leader. He is also the chief engineer at BNNT LLC, a company he formed with 2 of his colleagues. Mr. Jordon holds 16 patents, and in 2016 he and his colleagues were awarded the NASA invention of the year for his work on new BNNT synthesis techniques.
