About the Presentation:

High school students and teachers are specifically invited, although everyone should find the presentation interesting. Fun in Metals is a participatory lecture with demonstrations and exhibits of many facets of metallurgy. Professor Robert B. Pond, Sr. devised this talk for the young at heart from Johns Hopkins University and gave this lecture more than 600 times all over the world. His son, Dr. Robert B. Pond, Jr. follows in his father's footsteps in presenting the lecture. You will be taken on this romp through many well known and little understood facts of metallurgy, things we all have seen and few have noticed.

Questions asked and answered include: What is a metal? Where do metals come from? Why are metals strong? Why are metals weak? What is the nature of casting? Do metals make noise? Can they remember? Can they contract when they are heated? Is there a future in metals?

About the Speaker:

Dr. Robert Pond, Jr. has been involved in materials and metallurgical engineering fields for more than forty years. He has worked in research laboratories including the Ballistics Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground and for various industries. He has taught at the U. S. Naval Academy, for the ASM International, and is currently a full-time Associate Professor of Engineering in materials at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore. He has participated in the analysis of more than a thousand engineering failures for industry, the government, and in litigation, testifying in court venues more than 150 times.
