Although failure analysis serves to determine the cause and impact of failures with an eye to appropriate corrective action, it is worth noting that this activity is interdependent on many other parallel disciplines such as process design, component design, and (notably) quality and reliability engineering. In order to serve as a very brief (and arguably incomplete) guide to these disciplines, this chapter surveys both basic quality and basic reliability concepts as an introduction to the failure analysis professional.
