January Meeting - Fiberglass Manufactureing

  • January 12, 2017
  • Logan's Roadhouse - Pelham Rd.
  • Greenville , SC , USA

Please attend our event on Thursday evening for Networking, an Excellent Meal, and a Brilliant Presentation on the materials challenges involved with making glass fiber.  Jim will focus on how the challenges of working at 2200 to 2400 degrees Fahrenheit and the corrosive nature of the "liquid" glass are met with "exotic" alloys.  Jim will discuss how these alloys maintain a stable forming environment that allows for the production of the continuous glass filament.  Specifically we will hear how to overcoming problems such as creep and oxidation with alloy selection and product design.

Our speaker was a Process Metallurgist in the steel industry for 10 years, worked in the metallurgy and processing of platinum group metals for the last 30years: 10 years at Johnson Matthey, the worlds largest platinum supplier (5 years as chief metallurgist for the US division), and retired from PPG industries after 22 years as process engineer for the manufacture of platinum alloy components.
