Binary Alloy Phase Diagram Resources from ASM International
A binary equilibrium phase diagram plots the different states of matter as a function of temperature for a system at constant pressure with varying composition of two components (or elements). The addition of an alloying element represents another degree of freedom (or variable), which thus allows two distinct forms (or phases) to coexist under equilibrium conditions.
Digital Database
ASM Materials Platform for Data Science. MPDS is the world’s largest and most comprehensive repository of inorganic materials data comprised of phase diagrams, crystal structures, and physical properties. All of the phase diagrams are redrawn to a consistent format by members of the Pauling File team under the direction of the International Centre for Diffraction Data (R. Caputa, Editor in Chief). The ASM Materials Platform for Data Science is the digital continuation of the Pauling File. The platform contains more than 75,000 phase diagrams, with linkages to crystal data and physical property data. API access to data can be arranged. The phase diagrams are presented in the atomic percent scale.
Books
ASM Handbook, Volume 3, Alloy Phase Diagrams. Volume 3 provides a complete explanation of phase diagrams and their significance and covers solid solutions; thermodynamics; isomorphous, eutectic, peritectic, and monotectic alloy systems; solid-state transformations; and intermediate phases. The volume includes 1095 binary diagrams and 406 ternary diagrams. The phase diagrams are presented on a weight-percent scale, with atomic-percent composition provided on a secondary scale. Volume 3 is available in the ASM Digital Library and as a print book.
Binary Alloy Phase Diagrams, 2nd Edition (three-volume set). Provides 4700 binary alloy phase diagrams in 3589 pages. More than 2500 of the systems covered were critically evaluated under the ASM/NIST Data Program for Alloy Phase Diagrams; diagrams for the remaining systems were selected by the editors as the best available. The phase diagrams are presented in the atomic percent scale.
Desk Handbook: Phase Diagram for Binary Alloys, 2nd Edition. This volume provides almost 2500 binary alloy phase diagrams (one “best” diagram selected per system) and associated crystal structure data. The phase diagrams are presented with atomic percent as the primary and weight percent as the secondary scale.
Journal
ASM International’s Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion features critical phase-diagram evaluations for scientifically and industrially important alloy systems, authored by international experts. The journal is critically reviewed and contains basic and applied research results, a survey of current literature, and other pertinent articles. The journal covers the significance of diagrams as well as new research techniques, equipment, data evaluation, nomenclature, presentation, and other aspects of phase diagram preparation and use. Published by Springer Nature, the Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion is available online via SpringerLink.
