How to Keep Venice from Sinking Beneath the Waves
In the biggest infrastructure project ever, Italy has begun the MOSE Project (MOdulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico). Due for completion in 2016, the goal is to build massive movable gates to protect the city of Venice from the encroaching Adriatic Sea during high tides. The project is an integrated system consisting of rows of mobile steel gates installed at the Lido, Malamocco, and Chioggia inlets that will be able to temporarily isolate the Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. This video shows what the MOSE project is and how it will work.
