The Internet of Things

This video from IBM is a broad sketch of how the Internet of Things (IoT) could help manufacturing companies to improve efficiency and reduce defects. The IoT is the inter-networking of physical devices, machines, vehicles, buildings, and other things. When these things are embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity, they can collect, exchange, and display data, which then enables humans involved in manufacturing to detect and correct problems before they affect product quality.
