Royal Air Force celebrates 100 years

One hundred RAF planes flew over London on July 10 in a historic display to mark the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force. On April 1, 1918, the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service merged to create the RAF – the world’s first independent air service. The photo shows the Red Arrows, the aerobatic team of the Royal Air Force.

Members of the royal family watched during a Buckingham Palace flyover, which followed a Westminster Abbey ceremony.  An estimated 70,000 people lined the streets to watch the display.
